Spray Dye?

Have any of you ever used a dye in your spray? When I recently purchased some gly from the county, I went ahead and bought some blue dye as well. It was cheap and I thought what could it hurt? The plan for the alfalfa is to brushhog as low as possible, as soon as it dries out enough to not track up the field. The probable plant (no-till) date is September 11th. If these temps continue, I’m guessing I might have the opportunity to spray cool season grasses beginning to come on before the alfalfa germinates. So the ground cover will be very low and I think the dye could help. Oh yeah, the field has been sprayed and weeds/johnson grass are dying down right now.

It showed up, but wasn't worth the trouble to me. I just deal with a little overspray or a second spraying a couple of weeks later when what I missed shows up. Not very efficient, but since I'm so small scale I don't worry about it.

I will be adding one of these to my sprayer. For me the herbicide savings will pay for it in a year or two at the most.

A calm day wasn't my problem. As soon as you open the bottle, your entire world will be blue no matter how careful you are.

I've used it and yeah it can be worse than roofing tar, nevr-seez, any any paint you've used. It does wash out of your clothes and a shower took it off my hands.

It worked for me, but I'm using a backpack sprayer and it's hard to tell where you've been with out it.

What I like it in a backpack sprayer for is I can peek over my shoulder and easily tell how much is left in my tank to help gauge if I can make it a certain distance and back. I never have been able to tell on the plants themselves. I did pick up a bottle recently as I want to use the Craig Harper cocktail and I'd like a big visual on the trees I hit.

Thanks everyone, I'll be using 130 gallons of water for spreading the chemical with a 3 point sprayer and 28' of boom on almost 10 acres. So it will be a little bit of a different situation.

Yes, I was in a jam one day and could not find foamer for my po boy foamer. It did not work at all. I needed to be on my hands an knees to see it after spraying. I found it worthless and had lots of holes and gaps in spraying that day.

I might have to eventually spring for one of these, this one is more affordable for sure. Please report back on your opinion after using. I just can’t bring myself to spend tho r bigger money for some of the foam kits.

I took a plastic gas can and put a tire valve in the bottom I glued some plumbing parts to the top. I ran tubing from it to the end of my boom.

I have since upgraded the air compressor. Very inexpensive if you have more time than money and very effective

Pretty slick! What kind of pressure do you have in the the tank and how do you regulate it? Or is it just basically blowing bubbles into the liquid without much pressure?

I don't do any regulation. I just run the compressor into the tire valve and it makes bubbles. I fill it about 3/4 full and then add the foaming agent. Works pretty well. The only issue I have, and it is not due to the unit, is that if it is hot and sunny and I'm spraying a large field, sometimes the foam has dissipated by the time I make the next pass. If this happens I spray the field in sections. I generally don't have an issue if it is an acre or less.

Dye is very handy when doing basal bark spray in the woods with a pump sprayer. But your hands will be blue for a while. I don't think it would work well in a field sprayer.
