Sasakwa 80

I purchased this 80 acres in May of 2016 in Seminole county Oklahoma. It has a nice 3 acre pond and had been used to run cattle. The deer numbers are low based on my camera survey since it was purchased. I will be planting a 3 acre food plot shown in green and creating a 3/4 acre wildlife orchard shown in brown. I will plant buckwheat this spring and then a wildlife mixture this fall. The orchard will be planted in 2018. There is a well located to the lower right corner of the orchard and I will install a solar pump to irrigate the orchard. The land has oak trees, persimmons and sand plumbs.

Great looking piece of property. Lots of good cover. Should be able to create some nice sanctuaries also. I did a lot if hinge cutting in some of woods to create good bedding and security. Hickory and tall non producing post oaks. This also freed up some of the larger post oaks. Do you plan on hunting the plot? If so is there a way to move it a little down where it runs next to the trer line? Leave a little buffer for edge feathering. If so I would think you would see more activity in the late evening shooting hours.
Look forward to following your progress?

Hey Stevie, I'm south of you a little in NW Pontotoc county. The Sasakwa area is nice and secluded, can be a good thing or bad thing, depending on who has had what kind of access previously and how much you're there. Not that you asked for it, but I would second Todd's suggestion of moving the plot south toward the trees if possible. Besides being a little more huntable it would also provide a little more screening to the west. Right now it looks pretty open (visible) to the west. If moving it isn't an option (because of soils, topography, etc.) I'd suggest a row or three of plums, haws, or some sort of low or bushy, native, non-food producing (at least from Sept.-Jan.) woody cover. Depending on conditions it may make some good native grass that will grow tall enough to screen (although since it has been somewhat described as abused cattle pasture I doubt it'll do it soon). Another option (that I plan on doing in a plot of mine that I've been working to improve expand, but now is visible to the county road 300 yds away) would be to plant Egyption wheat, WGF (or tall sudan of some sort) or another tall screening cover on west end of plot.
Best of luck and looking forward to following.

Thanks for the input. I have moved both plots to follow tree line. I have left the orchard were it was. I have Mossy Oak Nativ Seeds Barrier Blend to do a 5 foot wide x 4000 foot long barrier. This blend has Big Bluestem, Switch Grass, Maximillion Sunflower, White Wingstem and Iron Weed it is suppose to grow 7-10 feet tall. This will be planted in two strips shown in light green on the west fence line. 80c.jpg

Take it from me...you're going to want that plot on the west side further from that fence...I am doing away with a plot that hinge cuts screen from all the neighbors but since they know it is right there just out of sight they sit on that fence like crazy...funny stuff, 230 acre of prime deer habitat at their disposal and they drive all the way through it to camp out on the fence behind my plot...Plot will be no more this spring, planting it all in trees, conifers...

I would put that plot west of your orchard to just east of your orchard which is smack dab in the center of your property.

Installed a Artillian electric diverter valve to operate the lid cylinders on my grapple.

Had a 60" wide dual lid grapple made.

Keep us posted on your success with the hog trap. I am in the same boat and have been looking at hog traps to solve my pig problems. Love the pics

Nice looking plot of land. Looking forward to watching your develop your new spot!!! Bring on the bacon!

Had a D5 dozer out Friday to remove trees in a five acre spot. There will be 4 acres of food plots and a 1 acre orchard.

These four are persimmon trees, a few small cedars to remove.

The flag marks the well site, going to install a solar pump and stock tank. Hopefully will be able to irrigate the orchard.

More persimmon trees.

Hog trapping update, two weeks and not one hog on camera. Deer are hitting the feeders not sure were the hogs went.

Stevie...I can tell this is going to be a great thread already! Nothing like having a new piece of ground to begin with a clean slate. Property on aerial looks awesome with good mix of hardwoods, open space n water. Not to mention the lake. What a bonus. You gonna luv that grapple. Prolly the most used implement for habitat work on our place.

Spent yesterdayImage00005.jpg Image00006.jpg picking up scrap metal, bricks, and junk in my 5 acre food plot/orchard area. There was a mobile home at this site about 12 years ago. We took 1480 pounds of metal to the scrap yard and made $37.00.

Got Food Plot #2 brush hogged, just a few small trees to remove, then it can be tilled. I left a stand of native persimmon trees next to tower blind. Going to get soil samples next time out, so I can add lime before tillage. It will be about 2 acres in size.
