Rage Hyperdermic +P for elk

Good luck! I hope you get an opportunity at a bull. I'm sure it will be a great trip and please give us a report when you get home. There's nothing like hunting out west.

Well, glad I went with slicktrick. Had a dream hunt. I got a good bull. 57 yard uphill shot with good wind in face. I got a great release but the arrow seemed to catch the wind and drift. Hit the bull through shoulder blade and we think one lung. Blood out the nose. The animal went 400 yards and the bad news is it took us a day to find it. 0 for blood trail. With the 80F temps The meat was bad

My buddy also scored. Great trip

Thanks for your help guys

Thanks for the report—look forward to pics. Across twenty years of bowhunting western states, shots averaged north of 45 yds. Event though I hunted mostly with slick trick mags, I always carried a mechanical because of the typical high winds—they clearly drift less in the wind. How far did it drift and how high were the winds?

This has been just the opposite of my experience. My shots have been 7 yds, 25 yds & 30 yds. And all with little or no wind. We hunt opening week and focus almost exclusively on hunting water holes/wallows. I have literally had elk almost step on me and almost touched noses with a bull a couple of years ago. That was a little nerve wracking. They are huge critters. Love it and I'm already counting down the days to next year's opening day.

Tough luck not finding the bull Bullwinkle but I bet you had a great time. Can't wait to hear the details and see some pictures.

Horseman, this was a combination of deer, elk and antelope (mostly spot and stalk). Waterhole hunting is always <45yds and mostly 20yds.

Here’s my bull. 6x7. You can see the shoulder shot. Made it about 400 yards. Couldn’t find blood - figured it filled internally.

70lb, 100 grain slick tricks , gold tip kinetics 10.8 gpi. 57 yard shot into wind

Here you can see the blood blowing out it’s nose. In the picture above the leg is back. If you pull it forward I made essentially a shoulder blade shot and thankfully the small diameter broadheads punched through. The entry hole was all bone

Bull, are you happy with the slick tricks? Can’t quite tell from reading if you are upset with the drift, happy with the penetration, or both, hahah.

I’m a slick trick guy myself. Curious your thoughts.

Yes. Plan to use them on moose in 2020 and rebooked another elk hunt in 2021.

I got back to camp. Shot at 60 yards with the wind at 90 degrees. Got 10” -12” drift. This wasn’t the broadheads fault. I didn’t even think about the wind

That broadhead punched through the shoulder blade at 57 yards. I got lucky

My experience has been great penetration. I think at 50+ you’ll get drift with any noticeable wind. I hunt whitetail who are a bit more finicky than Elk or Moose. I worry at 50+ they will move more than I worry about arrow moving.

Never hunted in wind like WY. Hoping to do a mule deer in 2020 and elk again in 2021. Need to consider the wind with long shots for sure. Been thinking, how do you prepare for this except practice?

I’ll use rage on mule deer. Elks a different story and those blades will make a difference in drift

Nice elk bull!

I ended up shooting the standard rage hypo. I hit just above and slightly forward of the front leg and got a pass through. Roughly 53 yards slightly quartering away. He only went about 40 yards.

420 grain arrow @ 310fps

Awesome. I can’t wait to go back. I think I am going to stick with slick tricks - there is no way a rage would have been successiful on my high shot

Congrats

Nice bull! I am frankly surprised that it was a lethal hit and had enough penetration with that hit high and forward. The Slick Tricks certainly did their job. Elk hunting is very addictive and by far most favorite animal to hunt. And to hunt them in the beautiful Rockies is a great bonus too. I am already counting down the days until next years opening day.

I got very lucky

Hit top of lungs

Went through shoulder blade

Enough said on luck

I think I hit it here.

I left it at taxidermist in Denver. Pedestal mount. Can’t wait to get it in my trophy room. The guide rough scored it at 367”.

Holy smokes! I know it looked like a very nice bull but that is enormous. Your pics here do it no justice. That's a bull of a lifetime!
Congrats!

Yes. I didn’t even dream about taking a large bull. I just wanted a bull or cow and an adventure with my buddy

Here’s a better picture. Love the mass and dark rack

I’m hooked
