Ozark Chinquapin

Good news and less good news :

Good news - the chinquapins are still growing great and the one we removed the tree tube and re-caged with a larger taller cage is doing great. we'll be working to get the others in the same position going forward as they pop out of the tubes. My father and uncle were hesitant, but they are on board now.

Less good news - the low rainfall this year (not quite a drought) caused 2 of the trees with catkins to abort the prickly husks (not sure the accurate name for this part) when it was forming. The 3rd tree never started to develop the husk, but it was away from the other 2 by a bit, so maybe they didn't get pollinated. Thus no nuts this year. We'll see what next year brings as they are still thriving and we are only in year 4 of plantings.

We have 1 grove established and doing well - hopefully next year for nuts. 1 grove that is growing well, but had some set backs with storms this year snapping a few leaders (trees look overall to rebounded but we are watching closely) - this grove is only 2 years established. a final grove that was planted this past spring that has survived this low rainfall year. The rain has returned the past 2 weeks, so hopefully they weathered the hot dry for the year and can prep for winter.

Here's pictures of the 2 best.

Trees are looking good. All of my sprouting nuts got eaten. I had 1/4 hardware mesh around them but no top on it. I need to pay my dues and try again. I have not checked on my 2 survivors since spring this will be their 2nd growing season. My AC dropped some burs this summer also, at the time I was thinking it was from storms we had. I’m still hoping to collect some nuts from them.

Started the chinquapin nuts yesterday. I received 15 counting mine, and then the other family members who have joined the Foundation. 14 of 15 started developing roots very well - 1 started a root, but looked odd, but i still started it. Organic Seed Starting Soil, some Mycorrhizae spores, worm castings, and biochar bits mixed together - same recipe as recent years. I'll get some pictures once they start sprouting.
