Operation: Move my trees!

Yes you read that correctly. We are about to attempt to move some of my larger chestnuts and oaks from my old place of residence to where we live now.

A little background and for those that don’t know we have decided to completely remodel and sell our house. With the sale will go several 8-9” in diameter chestnut trees as well as my 30’ tall DCO and my Concordia Oaks that I gather nuts from every year. We have decided to attempt to move a few of them with a large hydraulic tree spade as whoever ultimately buys the house will most likely want the property for something else rather than a chestnut orchard. It would absolutely break my heart if I sell the place and the new owners cut them all down.

Will be interesting to see how they all respond to being moved. I am hopeful they will survive as all these trees were started in rootmaker pots so they most likely do not have a very long taproot even for such a large tree.

I plan to chronicle our progress here in this thread so stay tuned!

Good luck! I would do exactly what you’re doing in your situation.

Be prepared to water the trees daily in their new location. If you can’t set up irrigation, they probably won’t make it.

Thanks. Water will definitely be a must for sure. We’ve had some pecan moved before and most of those did fine after they recovered so I’m hopeful these will do the same.

Several years ago, we did the same thing with a bunch of apple trees. A road project took my inlaws house and yard, so we got a backhoe and moved some big trees. Most were successful, but we did lose some as well. Best wishes, and I hope everything works out well for you.

Well today has been a busy one! Got all 9 trees moved. Four to my house and 5 to the deer woods. Cages will
Be going around the ones in the woods on Monday. Here’s a few pics.

Placed them down by a creek. Hopefully it’ll stay moist down there during the summer.
