Lastly some of the bad news - we found a GREAT buck that was a dead head. Had pictures of this deer in summer and last one we had was on October 25th. I am certain he died during gun season drives as my uncle could see a big buck that seemed to be shot running from the neighbors onto our farm. My cousin found him in a creek bed as we were looking for sheds - bummer!

The lesson this week - enjoy your time hunting and dont take yourself too serious. There are so many factors that effect these animals we love to chase. If you own 100000 acres, you are going to have a neighbor at some point and you are going to have one kill a good deer. You cant control things like EHD and other disease.

We are very blessed to have a great piece of ground and although losing this deer sucks - I am sure we will find more to hunt int he upcoming year!

PS - I took 8 soil samples I will be sending to the lab this week as well.

Thank you all for reading and commenting! Keep on chasing the habitat dreams!

only update to report at this time, we will be installing fencing/gates in 3-4 areas of the farm this spring. I am very excited to have this completed to help keep off joy riders! As for now, we are just enjoying waiting on Spring to show up in Ohio.

Well so far the buck dead-head is coming well.
1. Soaked in dawn and dishwashing pods for 4 days
2. Pulled it out, and everything fell off
3. Picked, used a wire brush, knife, etc to get all hair/skin off
4. I then used power washer to clean skull a bit more
5. Back in new soapy soaking water before I boil it this Saturday.

I can't wait to see that skull finished. I found a nice one this spring and need to get it cleaned up.

Thanks so I am hoping to bleach it this week. I am not letting it dry and had it in sun for a few hours yesterday it has already lightened up a lot. I’m anxious to bleach it!

Looking good Al. Thanks for the push to stop back in here. Missed these threads. I know you’re busy traveling with work but let’s get a few days picked out on the calendar and see what works for me to make good on that visit we’ve been talking about forever.

Hey buddy! Happy you’re back! Yes we need to get together for sure!!

Well I got my soil tests back and I’m blown away. Not one of the plots needs lime. I spread a lot of lime a couple years ago and it has held steady! All PH 6.5 and 7.2 - I’ll be adding some 6-24-24 to my clover fields when I decide to plant.

Also even though I have tilled, I’ve worked to limit my tillage- all my OM levels have increased, that’s the goal right? I believe that is because I’ve constantly overseeded my plots with grains to try my best to keep a root growing all year.

Thanks for reading!

Ok yall - what do you make of the below. I am a firm believer in the importance of record keeping. A few items that through me off.

1. Should the CEC change as drastic as it has from one year to the next? We have not added topsoil or anything like that to these plots.
2. What would make the OM drop in the two bottom plots? These were planted in clover chic mix and they were not tilled any more then any other plots.
3. The rest of the farm has GREAT results and the type of results I am looking to achieve, as described above.

Thank you for reading and the help!

Finding a skull of a nice buck sucks, but it's the way it goes. What plans do you have for it after it's finished? Bucks I have found or not had mounted I hang on the face of a wood barn I have. Some are just little yearlings and some are decent 3 and maybe 4 year olds. Only so much wall space in the house and shoulder mounts are not cheap either! Just something you can do - somehow put the date on the skull.....eventually you will forget what year you found it.

I'm waiting on a hand load and spread of 4 tons of lime like you once did. Great current soil results. CECs are good which I tend to like almost more than what the ph says. As for the OM, it can be surprising how much undisturbed soil has a great OM even in our poor hill soils. Once that environment is disturbed, either by tillage or even by the change in plant habitat by our planting, the OM actually can reduces. Sometimes nature is doing what she loves without our help. But with proper rotations, I think you will see good OMs thru the years. Thanks for showing, good luck. And I don't know your new wife, but I'm betting she will water those maters when she damn well pleases, and I know those were just idle threats by you. LOL.

ya this one will go in the house, next to the front door. I will probably print out a few trail camera pictures that I have of him and put them next to him. Going to be a neat piece when finished!
