Ohio Farm Tours

Gotta love that fire Buck. TOxley growing fast. When working the farm alone, I sometimes look at my dog and ask her if she'd go get help if something bad happens. Not so sure she would, just would keep digging for skunk and groundhogs. I love watching the nose on my dog, amazing how they smell something hundreds of yards away. She covered a dozen ac yesterday with nose in air till she got to the source. Has always made me more cautious of deer hunting and their noses. Happy Easter to you my friend.

Thanks buddy! Ol Toxey is something else with his nose. Smells so hard you can hear his nose working, thump thump thump.

Truly blessed to have a great dog, good land and great family. I love every second of it.

Well no big updates
1. got into some turkeys but didn't kill one - attempted to move on a tom that was hung up at 80 yards with a hen. Got close but couldn't close deal. It was a fun hunt, hope to get out another time or two.
2. Also got the yard mowed and a plot planted in clover, alfalfa mix

Got a couple big things in the works- All good but nothing for sure. IF you are a praying man/woman, I ask you send a few my way. Thank you all for reading!

Praying for ya bud! Farm looks great. Glad you could expand the orchard. Where do you get your trees from? And when is too late to plant fruit trees do you think?(without being close to water)

I buy almost all my trees from stark Bro's.

I've always been told the best time to plant a tree is in a month with he letter R in it. So basically never plant in may,June,July,August.

I'd say you could get away with May cause in the Midwest we still have cool temps and lots of rain typically

Well did some planting this weekend boys. Got 2 fields at farm in alfalfa, clover mix, chicory. Also planted extra garden seeds behind house, added some watermelons and pumpkins too.

Behind the house strip:

Momma's field - near house - call it this so Mom and others see the wildlife!

Double Stand Plot - clover, chicory, alfalfa

Also cleared another path/tree. The pile of wood for next year is building up nicely - I will be running the splitter through it all soon.

Thank you all for reading, commenting, etc. A lot of great things are happening right now, I will continue to try to stay on top of my thread.

May be a silly question, but what made you go clover/chicory/alfalfa?
And why plant it now? worried about watering or weeds?

Looking good man! cant wait to see what pops up....

Looks good. In a dry year you will love the alfalfa chicory plots. If your soil tests calls for boron, you can add by buying Borax at Dollar General for 3-4$/ 4#.

Well I plant beans and brassicas in my other plots. I rather plant it in spring, deal with mowing/weeds then in the fall. Reason being is that clover, chic, alfalfa won't really be the best until the following spring if you plant in the fall - in my experience.

Watering does not bother me to much this time of year. Farmers all over Ohio are growing corn/beans, Ill be able to grow a small amount of clover, chic, alfalfa - unless we have some unusually dry year, in that case we will try in the fall with grains!

What is the use for BORAX? I have a small Alfalfa Chicory behind the house, the deer have demolished in around my apple trees. I really enjoy having a plot that I can mow one week and watch it flourish the next.

Per soil test, my soil recommendation for alfalfa requires 1#/ac Boron. You can get a fert that includes boron @ .5 /50# bag, which obviously means I would need put down 4 bags, but it also has N in the mix. I don't like to add N cause it increases grasses. So I add Borax to a bag of 0-20-20 fert and spread. Borax is an old detergent that I guess some still use. And its cheap. Only place I consistantly find it is Dollar General.

Went back to the beginning Al, but must have missed the procedure. Can you detail your broadcast bean planting method? Please :D

Sorry my buddy - maybe that was the old thread. Typically- this has changed based on weather, time, etc. -

Step 1 - till ground
Step 2 - broadcast seed/fert (if using fert)
side note: I typically plant just a touch heavy, I do not double seed amounts or anything crazy like that.
Step 3 - till (just set till to hit top of the dirt, don't need to turn real deep)
Step 4 - pack it down and pray for rain

I hope this helps buddy! Please let me know if you have any other questions.

One quick update - on the orchard behind the house I checked on it tonight. I am going to get around 15 apples out of 8 trees - although that doesn't sound like a lot, that is on trees that have been in the ground for one year!

I will be buying many more trees from Stark Bros - I am ultra impressed by them
