Ohio Farm Tours

You almost forget how great of a tool your buggy is until it goes down. My rear tire was low when I got to the farm yesterday. I didn't have a pump with me or at the farm. I texted the neighbor and as usual, was told to help myself to their garage. Glad I didn't pop the bead on the way over! Place looks great!

Ain't that the truth! Even with a tractor, it just ain't the same!

well boys, I haven updated in awhile. Not a lot to update, been cutting firewood and stacking it so I can run the splitter through it soon.

I also picked up a beagle pup that I hope will be a rabbit hunting machine in a few years.

Meet Toxey- Yes I named him after the founder of Mossy Oak - Toxey Haas.

Always love walking when we have snow on the ground. These are limbs I trimmed of logs I was cutting for firewood. It amazes me how much the deer hammer woody browse, especially when it is cold!

not the best picture, but every piece of wood was browsed on.

Finally behind the house in my orchard, clover/chicory plot - the deer are still pawing through the snow to get to the good green food under the snow.

No other major updates, I will be planting trees at the farm next weekend. I am putting in 6 more apples. That is up to 16 fruit trees already this year being planted!

Well I just ordered 2 more bartlett pairs and 1 granny smith tree. Excited to do some serious planting at the farm!

Ill be putting in 8 trees there next weekend.

That will keep you busy Al. I put in 20+ three to five foot pines that me and a buddy dug up and transplanted. I have 10 apple trees coming from Turkey Creek Trees for the soft-mast openings I'm clearing now plus a few Kieffer Pears and American Plums for diversity. I've scaled my tree planting back from hundreds of seedlings to 50 or so bigger, better stock. Faster growth results and manageable amount to screen, cage and care for.

Good luck with the trees. That should keep the wildlife hanging around. Great to see the snow pictures but down this way we are ready for Spring.

I fully agree on this. I am a HUGE fan of Stark brows. I have about 10+ fruit trees behind the house. They are only a year old but look fantastic. I have about 15+ at farm currently. I am planning on adding these to the yard orchard and maybe a few on edges of the plots. I have popped in a pear here and there on plot edges to help draw deer to area, then they browse through he plots.

I am messing a bit with some smaller trees as well but those are typically what I will put in a tube and forget about for awhile!

Yes I hear you sir. We are gunna get smacked again this coming week I believe. I am ready for spring and so is that puppy! I love fruit trees, every year I plant a bunch and wish I would have done it more heavily around 7 years ago when we first bought farm. I did a few but not as many as I do now.

My neighbor has around 40 planted and they look pretty darn good! They are producing apples and we are on great terms so its nice to have us all doing things to benefit the wildlife!

You got that pup out yet sniffing bunny trails?

Mike, I got him out bit on some bunny scent I bought. He is a little to young yet, most places say around 10 months. Luckily an old farmer I work with it s fantastic guy. He has a friend who has a 15 acre starting pen. I plan on taking old Toxey there when he is around 5 -6 months old. He is just 9 weeks now, he is starting to use his nose and is learning sit, stay, and stop bitting daddy! hahaha

Well got a great weekend at the farm. It is always way to short! However I got a lot done. Started off by fixing the Polaris, finally got the new stud and tire back on. It is working like a charm!

After that it was time to check some cameras. IT was funny to see these two bucks still holding antlers much past the season. I do believe they have all shed out now though. They are already hitting the minerals pretty hard that I have put out for them.

Should be two good bucks next year!

I did get a little walking in this weekend for sheds, no luck which is always a bummer. I have a few really thick areas on the farm, is this multi floral rose?

What is the best way to eradicate it? As you can see it is so darn thick a man can't barely get through it.

Another interesting picture on the deer cameras. Always seem the biggest bodied deer don't show their head! This boy looks like a cow!

The real reason for the trip this weekend was to expand the family orchard that is in the yard. We had about 7 trees in the orchard, I added another 6 this weekend.

I did have to make a little room. I feel very confident with a saw but some advice I give. Take you time, cut a big piece out, use wedges, cut sharp angle towards the piece you cut out. Tree will fall where you want it.
