OFFICIAL 2017 Nut/Seed Exchange Thread

I noticed that there was some traffic on last year's thread..
..actually jbird told me!

Anyways......this will serve as the official sale/exchange thread for nuts and seeds for this year. For all those who are unfamiliar, feel free to post what you may want or what you have to sell/trade.

I encourage ANYONE who wants to try some tree growing to give it a go.....it's fun, generally easy, and there are a bunch of people to help with tips and tricks right here.

I'll start...I don't have allot of needs as I am scaling back my growing this year....running out of space and time!

I will have access to real nice oaks......burr, SWO, red, pin, and some English (could be a hybrid).....let me know if you are interested.

PS: We will have a separate scion thread on the fruit tree board.

I would also LOVE to participate this year. I'm looking for some persimmon, Burr Oaks, SWO, Osage Orange and hopefully I will run across someone with an Arkansas Black either in here or later in the scion swap! I will have access to a few DCO (a few of our plantings finally getting nuts), lots of RO, WO and some Pin oaks. Also have a few chestnut trees that have survived and are loaded with nuts. Pretty sure it's an american chestnut but can confirm that next time I'm back.

I posted something similar in last years thread but it's worth stating again.

Don't be hesitant to participate! You don't have to have anything to trade - just be willing to pay shipping. We are all here to help you in your habitat journey!

This is a great way to try something you either never have OR may not have access to seed wise. Its one thing to plant a tree - it's another level of satisfaction to grow your own from seed.

Other advice .......the US post office has reasonable rates for "if it fits it ships" type boxes vs going thru UPS or the like. Just be prepared for the funny looks you will get when they ask you what you are shipping and you tell them "Acorns"........ trust me, they think we are a little crazy.

^^^ What he said! I've been trading nuts (that sounds wrong) for a few yrs now and it's always fun. And to address the post office thing... I've actually found most of them grow stuff too and think it's cool that we have an exchange thing going on. I've even been know to leave a few of what I'm shipping with post office workers as they took such an interest in it and wanted to try planting something too.

I might have some DCO for you (they are native and I have yet to find a key that gives me a positive id on them). I've been told they are probably DCO but I can't guarantee it...

Here are the differences between them:

The first three pics are of nuts and bushes under 6ft tall. Notice their nuts are almost completely developed and close to ripe. All my trees that are under 6ft tall and produce have a drop time that is 2wks earlier than my taller Chinkapin oaks.

These acorns are on a bush that is knee high....

This is one of my taller than 10ft Chinkapin trees. They have near identical leafs, but are much bigger before they start producing and drop later than the smaller trees.

Anyone know if wild plums or hazelnuts are easily grow from seed I'm considering direct seeding some earlier next year. I usually get some American chestnuts every fall from the guy that was in qdma if anyone wants some? I will only use 10 this year and would like to find a home for the others.

I had decent success with wild plums from seed. Very aggressive growers for me. I have no experience with the hazelnuts.

You might save some shipping by extracting the seed from the apple. I think you can do it with a bucket of water and some time... Might research it on the internet anyway. I think most of our hedge apples dropped immature when it got hot and dry this summer. I will keep an eye out though.

I can't believe some one wants bois d' arc apples. They overrun everything here. Hard to cut down. Hard to kill. Have thorns that hurt like a sum bi&$@. Only they they are decent for is to make fence posts as the wood is very slow to rot.

Hedge is great: can grow in any conditions, makes great fence posts, never rots, burns hot, and the deer love to browse the leafs in the fall!

I'm in the market for some because our mountain deer eat anything and everything. They absolutely love whole pumpkins and honey locust pods. Even with our few food plots and natural browse the more food we can get for them the better.
