Welcome to the form. I am a self taught deer hunter myself. I was raised by fisherman and small game hunters. Hunting deer is similar, but different.

Establish a good working relationship with them early on. Pays big dividends

IMO if you are going to take the hunters safety course I would have your son take it with you, may save you a weekend next year when you could be out in the woods.
