We killed this the other day. Blonde Drake Mallard. Also killed a banded Drake mallard.

Dang right! That is a neat mallard, I can honestly say I have never seen on like that before. Odd how the chest and tail look pretty normal, but the other dark colors are "faded".

I will poach the $&@& out of all your ducks. The dog makes me do it. He is a pretty big dude.

Can I add pics from a goose blind? Boys each got their first goose last day of first split.
Yes, both birds were banded.

Wow. Now what are the odds that the first bird that each boy shot would be banded? I think you have a couple of good luck charms there.
Congrats to all 3 of you
Todd

We are struggling to get into the fields and locations we want to hunt this year. Seems as if everybody became waterfowl hunters this year and permission is already had by somebody else by the time we ask! Sat up in a field Sunday night and watched hundreds if not thousands of mallards land in a creek 300 yards from us. We knew it was a long shot as the birds were returning to the water and our only option was a field. Field lined up for tonight had a couple thousand ducks in it as well as some geese last night, hopefully we can score!

Thanks Todd!
I have hunted waterfowl hard my whole life and only have five bands, the odds of each one killing a band on their first hunt is incredible. if not for the fact we let them shoot first and I saw it with my own eyes, I wouldn't believe it.
And they were shooting smaller shot than the rest of us, I wanted proof they hit those geese so when I skinned them it was there plain as day easy to see they hit both of them.
I almost didn't post because I reali how unbelievable it is.

I found a pile of ducks this morning but they are roosting in the only place I can hunt them. There were more coming in at first light to join the others. I'm leaning towards setting up and just busting the ones roosting in there and waiting for the later birds. What would y'all do?

big water or small? I will have a few birds roost on my pond--including Geese. They always fly off when putting out decoys. If the water is small enough I'd try to get them up as peacefully as possible. If you have to shoot them off the water then don't expect those back.

I assume they are going out to feed in the fields? If so just wait for them to leave on their own and then set up.

I used to be in a Duck club that sounds like your exact situation. It was a 30 acre lake. Major roosting pond and loafing pond. Best hunting usually happened around 10am. Full moon is your friend. Many ducks will feed at night during the full moon then return right at first light.

So we ended up hunting that spot yesterday morning. Rained all morning which is normally great as the birds decoy easier but we had a crappy shoot. Even though we didn't hear any I'm guessing we cleared the pond before light coming in. At first flight birds were everywhere but wouldn't come in, just circled and circled. Did end up getting 3 mallards but I was expecting 2-3 times that
