A few pictures from last week.

Competing for most structure in a clover plot

Plenty of clover in this one too. I’ll add 50-60 pounds/acre of cereal grain and a few more pounds of ladino.

I love it, selective logging is the smartest thing that you could do for increasing habitat and increasing future timber value.

After a few replacements on my sprayer, finally got my plots sprayed. In reality I only sprayed a portion of one plot. Most have enough clover that I’ll just manage the best I can and see how long they’ll last.

Brass hose splitter to replace the leaking plastic one.

I saw a few hens with 7 poults a few hundred yards from our place, that was a pleasant sight!

Finally made it up to finish planting. It’s been dry when I’ve had the opportunity over the last 6 weeks so it’s a little on the late side.

The only plot I terminated back in August had a lot of volunteer WW. I added a few bags of WR for good measure and a little clover/chicory on part of it.

This was my original plot started in fall 2018. I decided not to terminate it this year, the 2024 ladino was looking good enough. It was mowed a few weeks ago and just over seeded with WR on Sunday. This is the best this plot has ever looked in September I think. It’s not magazine clean but there is a lot of clover in there.

I over seeded two other clover plots with WR and updated a few mock scrapes. A little overkill on this one!

Looking forward to 2025 hunts! We’re a few weeks into the season and I haven’t hunted, hoping to change that soon.

That upper pictured plot is looking good, it should be a real draw.

Any more progress pics on the cabin ? And might I add you have a beautiful little girl !

It’s slow. Just ordered windows and doors, shingles order is next. I expect we’ll have that stuff knocked out this month.

Home while the cabin is being built. I sleep great in the tent but it’s less fun when it gets really cold.

Three nights in the mountains for my first early season hunt.

First evening sit. Had a bear slip into this hickory grove about 30 minutes before dark. Never offered me a shot but I listened to him crunch hickory nuts until after dark. Someone ran bear hounds through my place the next morning. I hunted the hickory tree that night but he was a no show.

Bears can be jerks, I really should stop putting cameras on white oaks in September. They get used as foot holds by Yogi and his friends.

This doe snuck into and busted me in the tree but had to sneak in again to confirm the world record raccoon she had just witnessed.

Later that day I slowly hiked on very dry leaves to the back of our property. Several hours before dark this coyote bedded 15 yards from my tree.

Not a bad view from coyote ridge.

Congratulations Killer. Looks like somebody wants your poplars.

G

I believe poplar is currently the highest dollar option in our area but he’s cutting anything the mill will take. The area he’s cutting has a SW slope aspect, looking forward to burning!

select, DBH, what kind of cut are you having? You will be amazed. The little area that I'm working in now where most of the 50 tulips that I cut are laying, grew up this summer 10 foot deep in pollinator plants. I am currently considering going back and killing those stumps.

I asked him to take everything he can sell but I’ve marked some oaks as leave (seed) trees. I’d be happy if I could keep this block in an early succession with some scattered mature trees. Completely clear cut is also fine with me but that will take a lot of follow up.
