Kaleo Hills-Property tour

I love the amount of undergrowth that you have on your property. That looks like well managed habitat!

I have done some cutting but the trees down behind my son are courtesy of Hurricane Helene.

70% of the property was logged between 2013 and 2017 (before we bought it). I’m already cutting some of those previously logged areas that have grown too much to be useful to wildlife.

Successful deer hunting=thick cover.
Trophy deer hunting=thicker even than hair on a dog.

View from future Cabin front porch. Staked out the build site with the contractor and excavator.

Home site is coming along. It’s been slow due to frozen ground which is now a muddy mess.

Youth turkey season in NC. No turkeys were harmed, no surprise there I’m not a fan of early season.

Alright ! Tell us more about the hunt, the gun, the load, etc. Congrats to the youngun !

He shoots a Stevens 301 single shot with Apex #9 TSS. It’s an awesome little gun. Paired with a red dot I’m not sure there’s a better youth option for turkeys.

We hunted a few weeks ago during youth season with no luck. To be honest we spent more time burning and cleaning up hurricane damage than hunting on that first hunt. I really prefer late April into May when hens are on the nest longer and Toms get lonely. Also makes more sense to me to hunt them after most of the breeding has occurred.

We hiked up out of the bottom this morning to get away from the noisy creek. We only heard one distant gobble from the limb. We climbed higher and heard distant gobbles in another direction but it’s a part of our property where we’ve had successful hunts in the past.

Around 10 this Tom finally broke and came in to investigate. We watched him in the decoys for a few minutes and when he finally raised his head I gave Zeke the green light.

Glass pot call with a picture of us from his first bird a few years ago. It’s a great call to “finish” a bird with soft purrs and clucks.

It’s nice having him share the load. Won’t be long until he has most of the weight!

Thanks for the rest of the story. He’s a good looking young man, and congrats again, to both of you. You will treasure these hunts in a few years even more !

This one will be 29 in just a few days………IMG_3330.jpeg
