Welcome to the forum. In general, bigger bucks are more mature. Outside the rut, cover and seclusion are their main attractant, not food. However, quality foods are great attractants for does and young bucks, and during the rut, those does become the attractant for larger bucks. I've grown a lot of chestnuts from nuts. They are a great addition to hour habitat. For some unknown reason we have few if any nuts this year. Last year they were loaded. The other day, I went in search of some Allegheny Chinquapins for nuts to propagate. I found none on our native trees, so I'm presuming something happened this spring that interfered with pollination for trees in that family.
Best of luck and welcome!
