Hybrid Oak ID

I found these oaks not far from my house. They are 8-12 ft. Tall and 2 of them were absolutely loaded with these big acorns. It doesn’t really look like, as far as the leaf shape, any hybrid I’m familiar with. But the size of the acorn looks to me like a Bur oak crossed with something else.

The cap looks like pics of a Bebbs oak that ive seen, but these are growing in sand. Not sure a swamp white would make it. And I know have never been watered, except by rain. The people that have them only put them in because they had too and could care less if they live.

If you can, get photos of the bark and also an acorn with the cap still on it. Whatever it is, it produces a big acorn.

Swamp Whites will grow just about anywhere. Is definitely a white oak. Does look like some swo in it.

Perhaps it is Jacks Oak (bicolor x alba).

I hope you don't mind, but I posted the photos to another group that is knowledgeable on oaks. The consensus seems to be that no one knows for sure what it is. My guess would be a Beadles oak which is a cross between a swamp chestnut and white oak. Glad that you found it and are trying to grow more trees from them. I wouldn't mind getting a few if either of you can spare a few acorns. I would gladly pay for shipping.

@finahol and @Fishman did Cap get y'all squared away? If not I can spare like 5 acorns each. I know it's not much but every nut had dropped and since all were gathered from the ground I had a lot of floaters. Anyway let me know. No shipping. Just PM me your address and I'll get them in the mail.

I haven’t heard anything from him. If the tree has stopped dropping and you need the seed, I can always ask again next year. Report back on this thread and let us know how they are growing next year.

As an FYI, plant the floaters in a flower bed somewhere in your yard. You might be surprised how many will pop up. Floaters have a low germination percentage, but some will germinate. You can easily dig them out of the flower bed if they sprout.

Sorry guys, one of the things I sell is ice melt. I’ve been under siege since this ice storm hit.
I may have some left after I work out where I’m going to plant these and how many I will need. I’m direct seeding the hybrids, Chinkapin Oak and Sawtooth, this year instead of growing them at home, and transplanting. In the mean time they are in the fridge and will all be seeded in the next couple of months.

If you can spare some that is great. If you don't have any, that is fine also. You discovered the tree and picked them up so use them however you want. Please update us next year and let us know how they are growing. There will always be more next year. Good luck.

It’s crazy. It was in the 80’s here 4-5 days ago. It will be in the low 60’s this weekend. But right now it’s 33 degrees and drizzling, which equals ice. Green leaves on all the trees. This is a bad one. In fact the hybrids are in jeopardy of major damage. I have a 7ft Post Oak in my front yard that I had to tie a 1x2 to the main leader so it wasn’t ruined. More than a 1/4 inch of ice coating it.
Good luck to y’all down there, we have a big clean up to do. Thank goodness my trees are in tubes. And I just got enough fence to take them all out of tubes. Hmmmm. Damned if you do damned if you don’t.

A couple of them already have a radicle. I put them in their new winter home this evening along with some Burs and SWO's. I know it's a bit early but I'm going to start them under lights. I hope to see some shoots emerge in about 10-15 days. Here are some pics.

That’s awesome, I’ve been direct seeding them at my place. I’m excited about these acorns because the trees they came off of are only 10-12’ tall and already producing 100’s of acorns. Keep us posted.
