House and Habitat build thread:

I shot a doe and wife and one daughter shot bucks.I chased one around and finally got a shot but screwed it up.That was back in Nov. got pics of him a couple weeks ago so maybe I can find his sheds.Turkey creek dropped some more trees off today on his way through and as usual great looking trees. So only a few things to do this weekend, work on NT drill, shed hunt, plant trees, attend a couple events, and start over on sunday.

Been waiting for a post like this for a long time! That long tined buck is a BRUTE!
That long tined buck is a heartbreaker! Everything was perfect and it was a chipshot. On release I was 100% calm/confident and expected to watch the fletching sink in exactly where I was aiming. Then in horror the arrow slid in high and left. I looked and looked, and looked and looked. When I found him he was nothing but a dragged apart skeleton. I've re-lived that shot a million times and lost lots of sleep.

The other one scored in the mid-170's. I passed on him... then rattled him back after deciding I might be stupid. He didn't run 20yds and tasted great!

They can move a foot in a heartbeat. One year I killed two does out of the same 10’ tripod that was put together in a mesquite tree. The trees aren’t very tall in that part of the Northern Hill Country of Texas ! I shot both of those does at about 12’/13’ yards about two weeks apart. They were standing in basically the same spot. They both ran the same direction and died between 20 to 30 yards of the other. I just knew my arrow had entered right behind the shoulder and exited in front of the other shoulder. Perfect heart/lung shots. In reality, both were hit in front of the left hip, through the liver and one lung. Both died in sight and both were easily recovered but the shot was off by 15”/18” from the aiming point. Neither doe suspected I was anywhere near. I was well hidden and the wind was with me. A good lesson in how fast things can go to hell in a millisecond ! I don’t mind if I can see them fall, but to lose one hurts me…

People who say deer cannot jump a shot out of a “fast” bow, inside 25 yards, are nuts!

This one didn't jump. Completely relaxed until the arrow hit. The arrow just didn't go to the pin. I went back the next day and had the kid stand where the deer was and double checked everything. There was a very small twig with a break in it a few feet out feom my stand. Might have glanced off it. Or might have torque'd my grip. Or might have punched the release. Or a million other things. It caught me completely off guard when it didn't go where I was aiming though.

What did you think of the milo? I got nervous about shatter came, so I didn’t plant any.
The milo did great, and was so thick the sunflowers and other stuff I planted with it made it to maturity. Deer simply wouldn't go in it, instead they walked the edges. Like every other time I've planted milo it only lasts a week or 2 once it matures before all the critters cleaned it up. Lol, it was the best cardinal plot I've ever planted!

Seed was certified and from a dealer. Wasn't worried about weeds with it.

Great looking sheds.I still have some really good bucks carrying as of 2 days ago.I try to sneak out but it seems like we are fighting fires every afternoon into evening.I don't know how these guys are losing control with 5 MPH winds unless they are just not preparing enough.I did get 3 crab apples from Turkey Creek planted last night and caged tonight.

I wasn’t worried about weed seed. I was worried about the milo cross pollinating with johnson grass and producing shatter cane. Some guy on here, I can’t remember who, got in my head about it. Didn’t want to make trouble for our neighboring farmers.

I am not for sure if thats how it works as there is usually JG in or around alot of milo fields.Part of that is because they are both grasses.I like to have some for game birds and it is a good deer food.I really like in the early milk stage which falls during our youth and ML season and then in late season. But I think soybeans are hit harder from start to finish and takes less fertilizer than milo.

Shattercane is it's own thing. Not made by mixing sorghum and JG, but it can cross pollinate with them. It is invasive.

Beans are better in my opinion if you can grow them. I can grow a plot of milo where beans would never get over lip high.
