Got buckwheat ?

So far our buckwheat experience has been pretty sad. It was my understanding that it was like rye, would grow almost anywhere. I killed off the weeds in our small plots and broadcast buckwheat. Then of course Mother Nature decided to hold back on all rain so went in a couple weeks later and just a plant here and there. Rebroadcast buckwheat just hours before rain, then it rained on and off a few days. Checked on it this past weekend which was about a week after planting the second time and there are a few more plants than last time but certainly not a flourish of buckwheat! Will be planting for fall crops here in a few weeks so hopefully the buckwheat gets a bit of a head start.
I'm not sure isn't anyone in this forum that hasn't had years where mother nature just does not line up correctly for food plots. Seems like some years you could do everything right, but not always the case.

Try again next year on buckwheat, but also buckwheat in my opinion has slowish start where the first 3-4 weeks maybe gets ankle high and seems thin and then like week 5 on turns into a forest what is seemingly overnight and shades out everything in its path.

Did you broadcast on soil that was tilled? know you mentioned just killed off weeds wasn't sure if you were trying more of a throw n mow variation.

No I was trying to avoid tilling this year and see how it goes and was trying to follow (a little late start) Jeff Sturgis' procedure of gly weeds, plant buckwheat, later plant seed, crush buckwheat and gly. After the first gly, I had good soil showing so contact should have been ok, but with no rain Im sure that screwed it all up. The second try though had plenty of rain so thought it would take off. Maybe you are right and its just a slow start.

9 were caught during last years trapping season, and a bunch more just moved in after that.

I’ve come to the conclusion that it takes a community trapping to be successful in removing enough predators to make a difference. I’m the only one that traps around me and within a week of catching everything on camera the next wave moves in. I just wish my neighbors would get on board with it or hire someone to do it.

Will they let you or a friend of yours to trap their property?

I looked at my buckwheat yesterday and it’s looking pretty sad. The good news is, we got an unusual amount of rain (for July in TX) a week or so ago and I have another crop coming on.

Here is the buckwheat/Japanese millet mix I planted in a lower lying area that often washes out. As we’ve had very spotty rain, the buckwheat has gone nuts, most of it is waist high. Starting to flower, bees were working it over.
