Got buckwheat ?

Thanks guys, the open cab of my CanAm was full of bees as we went through that first plot. Seeing as how a couple years ago I got into them with my dozer,(and they ate my butt up), I was a little nervous. :)

My mind knew that from experience, but it’s like the old saying about the alligators and surveying the swamp.......
Is that the saying "
when you're up to your neck in alligators, it's hard to remember that your initial objective was to drain the swamp"?

Drycreek...what were seed prices for you this year?

If I remember right, buckwheat was $58 for 50 lb. Red Ripper cowpeas were $55 for 50 lb. The mix was Whitetail Institute Power Plant that was on sale. I can’t remember what it cost, but around $60 for 50 lb. I think. I don’t buy too much in the way of BOB seeds, but this was a deal with some other seeds thrown in that I’ll use this fall and I kinda wanted to try the mix with Sunn Hemp in it to see what it would do.

I’m putting a new field to buckwheat to build up soil a little. I’m not putting in a fall crop... will it be a problem if I just let it go to seed and deal with it next spring or should I mow it down?

If you're not planning on a fall crop the best thing that you could do is to let it go to seed. That way if you get any reseeding you will have something useful growing in your field. Buckwheat is not difficult to get rid of, mowing at a mature stage before it goes to seed will terminate it.

it’s not only good for the soil, come October it will be a deer and turkey magnet. They love those buckwheat seeds once they harden. You will have no problem with it if you want to plant something next spring. Just till or disc it in

We have had decent rain and I put down a lot of lime and fertilizer. My buckwheat is looking awesome. My wife may nominate me for "farmer of the year". Well that's bit of an exaggeration.

Buckwheat newbie question. Do deer eat it thru the summer or is it purely a cover crop to prep the area?
