Crabapple identification

This tree is growing wild in the mountains of western NC, zone 6a. Any idea what species it is? It's growing near a creek with a good amount of shade at an elevation of roughly 2200'.

By the size of the apples at this point in time, I'm going to bet that those are full sized apples rather than crabapples.

Looks like a nice wild tree. Leaves are very clean looking, no signs of FB, and a nice fruit set. I would do some work around it and give it more sunlight.

Probably planted by some varmint that pooped out seeds there.

You guys make me jealous finding all these wild producing apples! I have yet to find a volunteer here in west central Illinois and northeast Missouri. I guess I will just have to wait on my planted apples.

If you get it I would cut the trees down around it and put fertilizer on it.
