Buying a new mower

So I’m in the market for a Bushhog type rotary mower to use on my small acreage (28). I won’t be using it in brush, mainly to mow lanes in my switchgrass and firebreaks, etc.. I’m looking for brand names, pitfalls to avoid, just general info before I pull the trigger. I’m interested in a 6 footer, currently to be used on a 90 horse JD, but I may downsize to a 50 horse tractor in the future. Thanks in advance.

I run a 6' on a 68HP like nothing. Mine is a JD, which is obviously a descent mower. I have a 5' King Cutter, as well. It is a good mower, and has stood up to a lot of abuse. Just mowing grass I think most will fit the bill.

If money isn't too much of an issue, I'd get a flail mower. If money is tight, then I'd get a flail mower. With some imagination, it can eliminate the need for lots of other plot implements in a throw and mow system. The biggest reason I like flail mowers is because they lay down whatever you're chopping evenly, which is key when doing throw and mow with heavy residue.

I've had a 6' mower, Brushog Squealer brand for years. Very well built and easy to maintain. The blades come off easily for sharpening. If it was just brush, you wouldn't have to sharpen often but sharp blades give a much better result on grass. A 6' unit will work well with a 50-90 hp tractor.

My BIL has a flail mower he uses for a variety of mowing chores on his farm. Knowing that trees and shrubs will be showing up eventually, how would a flail mower handle that?edit: it looks like the website lists 4” max cutting height-since I want to mow 8-14” over the top of NWSG seedlings, that’s a no go.

There are brush worthy teeth, grass worthy teeth, and an in between. If you wanted to cut higher, I'd image you just raise up your three point and won't be riding on the roller.

I have a woods finish mower and a land pride bush hog, both in 3 pt. And a pull type vintage Brady stalk chopper which is a flail mower. For what I think you are describing I'd be using the finish mower or the flail.

I own a Land Pride 6' cutter for my 54hp(45pto) Kubota and it cuts great. I bought the lesser model and says it will only cut 1" trees, but I have cut up to 2" trees with no issues. I used my brothers 8' Kodiak heavy duty cutter a couple of weeks ago and I liked it. I liked how it was short from front to rear, which will let me have a little more room on a trailer.

I have a John Deere 8' rotary mower (brush hog) that i use for grass or brush or T&M. I can handle it easily with a 65 hp tractor. You won't go wrong with John Deere.

Heading to a consignment auction on Saturday-they have a variety of mowers listed, as well as a DR brush trimmer.
