Afternoon gents,

Got over to the farm and checked a plot that had buckwheat last summer. I didn’t get a chance to play any fall seed in this plot and nature take its course. I noticed what looked like a lot of very small buckwheat seedling. Is this normal for buckwheat?

My plan was to plant buckwheat and sunn hemp there early May. If frost doesn’t get the buckwheat, this may turn out really good

Add some barley too. You need that third sister to help ward off a weed invasion.

Sister 1: Broadleaf (buckwheat)
Sister 2: Legume (hemp)
Sister 3: Grass (barley)

It would help. I think you've got to wait for warm soil with millet, but it would still be better than nothing.

It’ll probably be mid May or so before I get to seed this plot. Since it looks like I’m getting some buckwheat reseeding action, I might see if I can some good growth before I disc it in.

Buckwheat just needs soil, water, and heat. It is the easiest thing to grow.

I’m a food plot newbie with limited access to farm equipment. Buckwheat is about as easy as it gets from a plotting standpoint with the exception of WR.

What do you guys pay for buckwheat? People say it’s cheap but I could’ve sworn I paid $40 for a 50 pound bag a couple years ago and that’s not that cheap to me

I just bought a bag this week. $39

This is the first buckwheat I've ever planted and I couldn't tell how well it evened out over the two plots I planted. The only thing I could gauge was the level in the spreader. Next time I'm gonna mix it with my fertilizer so I can at least see that.
