90 Acres Northern New York

Congrats on the nice 8 point buck. It takes 10 years to learn how to hunt a new property, that's why it's counter productive to change hunting areas a lot. After a while you will know exactly where to sit at a certain point in the season.

congratulations Rusty - nice deer for sure! 2.5 or 3.5 - to me it doesn't matter much. 160 lbs in late NOV is really good. he looks like a really healthy buck!

With not having any pictures of the deer I harvested, I had my fingers crossed on the latest card pull. Jackpot !

This is one of about 4 vids of this fella. I think this one shows him best for guestimating his age.

The first vid in this sequence ( not posted) is of this buck chasing a doe into this brassica plot.

She keeps running, and he stops for a bite. After grabbing a snack, he walks back towards the way he came.

I’m really enjoying using the Browning cameras on video mode.

This camera had a 32 gig card in it, and it was full of 250+ 1 minute videos. It’s entertaining watching them dig through the snow to get at the brassica mix.

Hopefully Santa brings me a fist full of Cabelas gift cards that can be converted into an additional camera.

I have the brownings too - i get about about 50 videos per 16 GB - I love the battery life

Ok for some areas but a scrape can fill the card in 2 days - your buck has really crisp lines white/brown, hes a beautiful buck,

Looks very good.

You mentioned no trees to place a stand in near the one food plot, don't let that limited you!

Academy Sports sells some very nice and comfortable Tripod and Quad Pod stands you can set up where ever you want. I had to start using them because our place just doesn't have the tree size needed at most spots.

The Tripod has a Suspended Seat and is the most comfortable seat in a stand I've ever had. They also sell a Blind for it that has a roof you can leave up or fold back your choice. Their Quad Pod has a Double Seat that allows for two people to sit at the same time, if that is something you would want to consider for Kids or Wife to go along with you. I know of several guys that chose to not use that seat and put down Rubber Mat over the Mesh Floor and put a big comfy Swivel Office style chair in them for a single person. They sell a Blind Kit for it as well, but I didn't care for the two small windows and chose to follow the advise of others and put an Ameristep Doghouse Blind over it and it works well. Larger opening for the single window.

Some more choices for you to consider.

Rusty - Just ready your thread for the 1st time. You guys up there have some beautiful properties. Congrats on the latest buck! Looking forward to following along.

It was a great season for me, the harvest was a cherry on top.

I took great enjoyment in converting an old cow pasture into a corn and soybean food plot with a new new to me two row planter. The results were phenomenal for my first attempt. The raccoons enjoyed it more than I did however. The little bit of corn that made it into deer hunting season was gone by Thanksgiving. Next year it will be bigger and better.

Using the cameras on video mode was also new to me, and something I will continue to do.

Yesterday I picked up one of these to enhance my photography arsenal-

Farmhunter- funny you should mention scrapes as I located a new one the last time I was on the property, and put a camera on it. Usually scrapes on my place are a “one and done” scenario, but I’m hoping for more this time.

Deadeye- I’ll google up those tripod stands. Seem like they might fit in on my place.

TripleC- Thanks for the complement. The north country can be quite beautiful in the winter. Two requirements are: a snow blower and a four wheel drive vehicle. The rest you simply have to adjust to. The temperature is in the upper 20’s today, and a buddy of mine is standing crotch deep in a stream trying to catch rainbow trout. That’s a real adjustment.

Native and Weekender, thanks for the complements. Like I said, the buck was the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. The rest of it was almost as enjoyable.

Howdy all,

The five cameras I have on the place have been soaking for 7 weeks.

Two had 150 vids each, but most were junk as I had them set to refresh too quickly.

Anyway, here’s the highlights. What do you think is going on with the doe’s ear ?

nice to see a couple decent bucks made it through - will be fun to see if they spend next summer & fall on your place and to see how they grew.

The doe's ear I'd guess an infection that didn't fare well for her. We had one once with a shot gun slug hole through both ears. One was a clean hole but the other flopped over. It never got tattered like the one in your video. She should be easy to keep track of.

Enjoyed your videos Rusty. Have not used the video mode on my camera to date. Will give it a try with a couple today. Do you set all of your cameras on video mode? What types of spots have been providing your most interesting videos?

Looking forward to seeing how your flying camera works out.

Chainsaw, I have all the brownings on video. I think they are set to film for 1 minute per activation. I use 32 gig SD cards with lithium batteries. I have them on trails or heavily used food plots. Most of the vids are unremarkable, but the good ones are pretty amazing.

I find that I tend to put the cameras too close to trails, and often the deer end up getting spooked to some degree.

It’s also interesting to see how the animals react to the infrared flash. The coyotes and foxes nearly jumped out of their skin.

I got quite a few vids of a fisher, some raccoons, turkey, and blue jays. No bobcat yet.

Editing the videos is an experience as well. The editing software is very robust so it’s been quite a learning experience with that.

I hope to get some good flying weather soon.

Adobe Premiere Elements. Think it was about $100. Adobe also offers Premiere Pro for about $300. That’s gotta be crazy good.

Hey Rusty - I just read your thread and very much enjoyed it! You’ve done some great work, transforming your property into a whitetail haven! I’m in 6A as well.
