2019-2020 trapping journal

2 cats, 2 possums and 1 coon so far for me. Had my traps out about a week. I’m a little surprised no coyotes yet. Got 2 inches of rain today...we shall see what that does for the trapping.

Caught a trophy last night! Pics to come soon...don’t want to spoil the surprise.
 
I caught one in a coyote set a couple years ago by a toenail and he was dead as could be by next morning.I like patroling my wheat fields on warm spring days and thinning out most so far is 7 in one day with pistol

They are fun to sneak up on, I'm convinced they are blind as a bat and don't hear worth a darn. Warm spring days are great for dillo killin! I like to carry a pistol while on my runs on days like that. I have quite a bit of rooting going on right now in my plots. Good sign for my soil health as they eat worms and grubs, but I sure hate to see the plot damage.

I was deer hunting at one of my permission spots when I looked at the pond at dusk and saw a wake. Through up the binos, beaver. Hunted there another evening saw possibly 2 beavers in the pond. Landowner said get rid of them. My trapping buddy and me set a couple 330’s and foot holds. Checked them the next day...

The natives preferred it over Elk. I said the same thing, until I skinned one and was going to turn the carcass into coyote bait, then decided to gut it and throw on the smoker. Cooked low and slow 6-7 hours. It was damn good. Let all my friends try it, now they beg for me to smoke them.

You caught an armadillo? Leg-hold trap? I've caught several but since you can't bait them I make a funnel with boards that leads to a box trap. I wonder if a body-grip would work on them?

I caught him in a 330 conibear on a slide set.
 
I don’t think armadillos normally have slides. I typically find them with very pronounced burrows - usually in my fields. I caught this one in a slide set going down a dike into the salt marsh. I think it had become a trail used by all the critters. I’ve got coons, otters, and now an armadillo in it.

2 more coons last night. Going to pull traps tomorrow morning and switch to a different property that is full of coons.
