Name this shrub

I thought this was spice bush last time I saw it but now I’m not so sure. Most of the spice bush on our place has red berries already, this plant has small buds. Pictures taken last week in a 2-year old clear cut.

Western NC, 6B, 3k feet elevation, PH 5.6.

Sure looks like spicebush.
Give it the sniff test and you know if it is or not.

It is a spicebush. But is is a male. That's why you see the buds right now and no berries.

I’m the full 4600 miles away already but will remember that next time.

I sure hope you’re right. I definitely like the idea of a native plant taking over the clearcut.
