Live from the stand 2017

Not live but did get the first sit of the year in here on the hollow this evening. Sat the south plot and watched 5 does for over an hour and when I got down to leave I ran into a mystery deer in the dark. Plot worked as I had hoped since I had it expanded and left an island and strip of trees in the center. I was in a white oak in that island and I had does behind me eating acorns, some to my right eating brassicas and some to my left eating clover without stressing each other because the plot is broken up. I couldn't believe how much those does were eating!

Post Live From the Stand: Finally got a good North wind this afternoon to hunt this guy. His name is Kim Jong Un. He's a 6 year old bully that needed to get shot (hence the name). He has a relatively small home range during the first part of the fall then really gets on the move during the winter. He's always busted up and every picture of him his ears were layed back. I've been getting pictures of him near a water hole in the woods with white oaks dropping acorns all around. Where he stays he had the wind covered for all but a North wind but he can see the entire bottom from his bed. Getting to the stand required me wading up a creek and sneaking to the tree directly behind it. I've been busted by him before by just walking to the stand. I felt like I made it in the tree without being detected and felt really good about today. Had a few does and fawns come through and get a drink and a snack. About 6:30pm a group of young bucks showed up. They started looking up the hill and getting really nervous after 10 minutes. Then with about 15 minutes of light left he showed up running the young bucks off and claiming the water hole his. He didn't know I was there until he walked by broadside at 27 yards. He froze. He knew he'd been caught. It was too late. The arrow was on its way and found it's mark. He ran 40 yards and pile up. He ended weighing 2 pounds shy of 200lbs.

Nice kill there ! Two years ago, I had a nice 3.5 year old buck, probably mid 120s that I had several daytime pics of. He was THE ONE that I was hunting. Just as the chase kicked in , a one-eyed bully buck came onto the scene. I was lucky enough to catch several pics of the two fighting. My nice buck left and I never saw him again. I got numerous pics of the old one-eyed bully, all over my place, every single one at night ! Kill the bullies !

Great kill pine! Bully bucks can be a pain...I have a bully buck that has been using our place the past 2 falls. He has taken over and even though I have pictures of much nicer deer I really hope the bully 6 shows up under my stand. He is running everything else off...

Those who don't hunt will never understand that more things are accomplished sitting there than just killing a deer. You have no choice but to contemplate things. They don't understand that when I make that walk to the woods and carry life's burdens with me I leave them there and come back grateful and humbled for the life the good Lord had laid before me. Sometimes it takes staring at the same spot for hours to see the whole picture. Hunting does that for me.

Thank you for that response, much appreciated, sums it up nicely.

That's a real fine buck PineSapJunky. It is cool how you included your extra effort sneak access to the stand. That's a trick many of us think about but few of us actually use it. I'll bet more of us will now. Great deer and congratulations on outwitting one of the best of the best.

image.jpeg I tried to post live this morning but not enough signal to post pics. About 70* here at daylight, borderline for me. Wind was decent until about 9:30 and then it got iffy. I'm hunting out of an open tripod and Ozonics doesn't work as well in the open, so I got down about 9:45 and headed home. All I saw were two cat sqirrels thrashing the tops of the hickories and white oaks. My buddy killed another hog last night, number 13 for him this year. Five for me, if I count the one I never found earlier this week. ( And I do, because I smelled it yesterday afternoon).

I guess this is as close to a stand I'm going to get today. I call it "The Cake Stand". When me and my wife aren't working a full time job we moonlight as bakers. These cakes were for some family that finally decided to get hitched. Oh well. Maybe tomorrow.

87 degrees yesterday and then a cold front came through overnight dropping 3/10" of rain and blustery N winds and 50 degree temps. Got up early and grabbed my bow and headed to a place on the hollow I haven't been to in months...our canceled North Plot...I accessed from our East boundary line which was perfect for the conditions...

At 7:05 am 2 small bucks entered the opening and then crossed below me headed to bed. Turkeys are gobbling and I heard a deer bawl in our woods to my west...

Man I sure was wanting to get in the stand this AM. Still not ready to leave my wife alone after surgery. Hoping I can get someone over to stay with her so I can hunt this afternoon. Mesonet shows ,67" of rain at the ranch.

Good luck Okie
