2019 Live from the Stand

Wife wanted to come up to the cabin for her birthday. Hot today but luckily clouds are rolling in.

Muzzleloader started yesterday but today is the first day the wife and I get to hunt due to the pouring rain yesterday morning and then the birthday party we had to attend yesterday afternoon. I basically had a 10 point buck tied up on our deer lease near my wife’s stand but another lease member who didn’t have a prior engagement capitalized on it yesterday afternoon and got the buck...

Moved to a different spot last night and among the showers of rain this little fellow kept showing up.

Hard to see in the pic but he’s a Spike. Right in that safe zone of to short to be legal (10” main) buck and to long to be a legal (less than 5”) antlerless deer.

Day Two Begins.

See what it brings. This is the little field that I had good Clover growth in last year before this years drought and the Dog Fennel took over.

I over seeded it and did a mow n throw so we’ll see what happens now that we got some rain.

Need to level this stand out. It is leaning forward and after sitting in it for an hour plus it makes everything hurt from trying to hold yourself right. Take care of that next trip.

Up on the mountain at our deer lease. 7:30 am hear a buck grunting and some chasing. Turns out it’s a young 8 pt harassing 4 does. Very overcast, calm, 50’s. Rain moves in again tonight for another 3 days...

Had another small 8 point come through an hour ago. Every deer has gone through this area in the photo...

I put this stand up about a month ago. It is at a junction of 2 trails through our property. It right in between 2 great white oak groves and overlooks the head of a really deep hollow that the deer travel around. The reason I put a stand here is because when entering our property in the morning this is the furthest I can go without spooking deer. If I go further than this point I always have them blowing and running from the white oak grove...I can access this stand by simply stepping off of a main access trail.

This is where I went this morning. N wind...plan was to catch deer going around the head of the hollow. The hollow is just across the trail in this next photo looking NE.

It was a successful first sit. I did not spook any deer whatsoever and I got to watch deer doing exactly what I thought they would do...

Ended up seeing 7 does from this stand. It needs a few trees thinned but I expect this to become one of my new favorites!

That was a great deer for sure. Hopefully the successful hunter also had encounters with him in his earlier years and had let him walk. If not then he was just plain lucky and that happens sometimes. QUOTE]

Well I had Success this morning. Not a Monster like y’all get but a Legal Buck (2-points on one side) for my Zone and DMU.

Wasn’t what I was looking for but honestly I’ve never shot a Deer in Florida before. Only hunted here the last oh 5/6 years and it is the hardest hunting I’ve ever experienced.

Now if your on Private with a Group that don’t mind spending some money you can build a real nice place in sort order. We are doing the best with what we got.

Interesting side note to this tale. Was supposed to rain most of the night and all day. I selected my #1 Stand to go sit for an All Day Sit in the Blind Covered Stand. It started raining earlier than predicted and when I woke at 5:00 am it had stopped. I figured go for it.

In the stand just as it was getting light I was getting dozey. I felt my eyes closed and then a Bird in the tree right at ear level Squawked and it honestly sounded like Wake Up! To me.

I laughed to myself and said ok I should wake up, when I heard something. It was a Deer walking right under my stand. I could look down on it.

It was eating Acorns that had fallen a I couldn’t tell if it was a Buck or Doe. In any case it was an Adult Deer.

I lost sight of it then it reappeared walking down one of the lanes I had cleared then stopped. It was only 15-20 yards away but much to straight to chance a shot and I told myself to wait. It went to the Feeder I’d made and ate for awhile never giving me a shot.

Funny how my heart was pumping and my arms shaking for such a small buck. I’ve shot lots of Bucks and have a pretty nice one on the wall, but I haven’t felt like that in a long time. I had to make myself calm down.

When he turned Broadside I was ready and had the 30 yard mark in the scope lined up where I wanted. I don’t really remember pulling the trigger on my crossbow, but I heard a Loud Whack as they mechanical broad head hit. Man it was loud!

The Grim Reaper did its job and I listened as he ran then I heard a crash. I was sure he was down but I made myself wait a full hour before I went to look.

Bolt was covered in blood. Pretty easy trail to follow although I lost it for a few minutes before finding it again.

He made it about 50-60 yards.

I am no longer a Florida Whitetail Virgin.

Oh and as soon as I found him it started to rain again and never stopped. It was like it was meant to be.

My SIL is crazy happy for me. So was my wife and daughter.

Best of all one of my grandsons asked his dad “did papa get another Bucky?”

Don’t get no better than that no matter what the size.

Meat for the freezer ! Congrats Deadeye !

Looks like a good setup Okie. In a couple weeks I would expect your buck/doe ratio to shift the other way.
I was drying my hunting clothes this afternoon and looked out the window at our backyard and a pretty nice 8 point was trying to corral a doe so I figured I better get to the woods...rain and all...I ended up seeing 4 does and 3 bucks that I passed. The largest was a 5.5 yr old buck I call “Ten”...had he came by 2 weeks ago I would have taken him but after killing the 13 point I am holding out for something really special...and really special is using our place. Lol!

This is a picture of “Ten”.

Good for you Deadeye both on harvesting a buck in Florida and on still enjoying the thrill of the hunt. Enjoyed the hunt story.

Not live but only because I was surrounded by deer from before daylight till 11:45 am! It was 26 this morning with a 15 mph wind. I was in the oaks...6 bucks, 9 does all told. No shooters but my big boy is starting to day walk now!

I saw a buck in the backyard just before I left to come out here. Saw 3 does on way to stand and nothing since getting on stand...

Congrats. We finally got some nice temps to hunt this weekend but not sure if I'll take the Xbow out or not.
