2020 Live from the Stand

Had an exciting afternoon. Several deer came out, and we briefly had what looked like a shooter buck out in one of our lanes. He briefly came out again, but the second time was partially hidden. Short hunt tomorrow morning since I need to be back in time for church. Rain moving in tonight so not sure how that will work out.

Talked the wife into letting me stay for the morning. Super foggy right now.

View attachment 20475 View attachment 20474 View attachment 20472 Well, it’s not quite live or from my upstate NY property, but I thought I’d share this hunting report. I made it back out to the eastern MT badlandsView attachment 20467 View attachment 20468 . This trip we struggled with adverse weather 4 of the 5 days. In addition, the rut was a week late kicking off. Still, I passed 4 or 5 160- 165” 24 to 28” wide deer looking for the rare monsters this country can produce (we chased a 220” buck last year and the stars never aligned). Although the photos show the country is nearly treeless, there are in innumerable ravines and even 6’ tall sage flats where the deer hide. We averaged 60+miles a day on this particular ranch from the SxS. We hunt by extensively glassing from high points regularly spotting deer from more than a mile a way. The bucks are either with the does, or bedded on high points watching the does. This buck was spotted from 900 yds and we were able to work into just under 200yds. One shot through the lungs from a 270wsm dropped him in his tracks. The guide estimated live weight at 280-300lbs. For perspective, the neck measured 34” in diameter. The buck was just over 31” wide.

Nice, wide old Muley buck there Elkaddict. My one and only mule deer came from just S of Miles City not far from the Powder River if memory serves. Wide open, hilly country, but pretty nevertheless. Also the only place I ever shot prairie dogs with a .300 Win Mag:D
Congrats !

They came back in about 15/20 minutes, doe went back where she came from, little buck kinda gave up and snatched a few bites out of the plot and wandered off. I managed to get about 30 seconds of video with my phone and look him over with binos, definitely a 2.5 year old seven point but has the makings.

WINDY this morning in NC. Gusting to 40, I wasn’t in the tree long.

Saw two does and an extremely fresh scrap.

I went all the way to the north end of our place this morning Using our East fence line as my route, wind was from the west. About 7:10 am a nice 3.5 yr old 8 point came from N headed S. I actually thought I was videoing him with my phone but apparently I didn’t. At 7:30 I had a small spike pass. I got down at 10 and will try again this evening.

In a stand I’ve been waiting for the right wind to hunt for a couple weeks. Bumped a little guy bedded under the stand on way in, otherwise seemed clean though.

Jack and I have had some good views. Each we hunt has some good firewood on the ground courtesy of the latest hurricane. We have seen some does but are holding out for some bucks we have on camera.
First morning we snuck in to find one only to spook them an hour before shooting light. The next morning we had them on camera at 4.30am and knew there was no way to sneak in. (I already have plans for new shooting house placement for stealth access)
We are in that stand this afternoon and hoping. Camera shows action each morning and afternoon, but mostly at night.
Here's hoping

My son killed this 9 point this afternoon that we believe to be a 4 year old. He got to try out a new rifle I bought him for his birthday...:)

That's a mighty fine looking rack. A long nose and kicker points definitely indicates a 4 year old. The case is being made for a lot of guys to persuade their wives that they need a new rifle.

40+ gusts all, I took the opportunity to hike my border and pull cards.

31F with 50mph in the morning. I’ll definitely be hiding on the leeward side of a hill.

Good hunting or no, I loose motivation to hunt on ridiculously windy days right after a front.
