Winter Feed

I've got crows bad at my water hole. I had a trail cam load up with hundreds of crow pics when it got dry in August. It was so bad, I pulled the camera in.

Maybe try moving the corn into very deep brush so those crows have to walk in there. Then maybe the yotes or fox may start cleaning them up if they go under the canopy.
I've got some thick spots but nothing thick enough to keep the birds out.

Beats? I've never seen them for sale outside of a supermarket. Can ya buy them bagged? Nutritional benefits?

They sell them by the truck load in many places around me. They sell them either by the tractor scoop or by the bag.
They’re a good source of carbohydrates which is what the deer need this time of year.
I think the deer like corn a little better, but beets aren’t raided by squirrels, raccoons and bears so much. I just get pictures of porcupines and deer on them

If you feed straight corn the deer will just gobble it down without getting the nutrients they need. If you feed a lot the fancy mixes it will get costly. I buy 100lb bags of shelled corn and oats at the local feed mill and mix them by pouring a part bag of each into the feeder. Then I set a 50 lb. $7 tractor supply mineral block beside the feeder for minerals.

This is my plan for this year, I get a good deal on the BB2, and have an unlimited supply of rolled corn for nothing, so I'm gonna mix the 2 and start feeding that, cut down on the cost, even if they start eating a little more I'm still ahead.

Rolled or ground corn is much better

Found something that works for us and doesn’t break the bank. Tractor Supplies sells a record rack protein pellet. We have been mixing that with corn and some roasted soybeans from the local co-op. For around 80 bucks we can get 100 pounds of each and mix all three up evenly. Deer are loving it!

Sugar beets are not a commodity in most parts of the world, unfortunately. Never seen them south of Michigan in the midwest.

Man that seems awful expensive for 100#. I know I get a sweet deal on the BB2, 40# bag for $20 IIRC, but even then I would think that the pellets should be cheaper and I know even rolled corn in 50# bags is pretty cheap.

Deer mainly need carbohydrates this time of year as opposed to protein, so I’d recommend skipping the protein pellets and using that money to buy more corn/soybeans. Besides that, soybeans are very high in protein so I don’t think you’re getting much of an added benefit from the protein pellets.
Corn is very high in carbohydrates, and soybeans have a good balance of carbohydrates and protein, so I’d recommend sticking to those.

100 pounds of record rack, 100 of the corn and soybeans goes along way for us. We only put out about 100 pounds every week or two in the winter months

Ohhh so you're getting 300lbs for the $80 that sounds a lot better
