Whippoorwill Ridge

Only half dozen bucks you say, but dang, very nice. good luck on them. Loved the sunset pics and hard work looks to be paying off.

That palmated buck is a stud! I bet when the bucks disperse from bachelor groups you will gain bucks. Is there much ag in the area at all. At my place here in Illinois, once the first corn fields are harvested, we start seeing all kinds of bucks that we have never seen. It's like someone flipped a switch.

There is zero ag. There’s a few 3 to 6 acre overgrown pastures where I’ve seen bachelor groups within a mile of me but these are in high human impact areas. Thought my hidden, inaccessible bottom field complete with stream and natural spring waterhole would be a bachelor pad. I don’t have high stress doe numbers or anything else like that so I am a little puzzled. But it’s all about how the property hunts and as long as the bucks show up when it counts!

You must have sent some good vibes my way because yesterday’s card pull revealed 11 different bucks. All were at a mineral site from around August 23rd until September 3rd or so. A lot of young studs! “Handlebars” is still around, that makes three years of history. Unfortunately, no sign of “Big Boy,” whom we knew the past two seasons. However, the palmated buck is an absolute stud!!

New “Honey Hole,” food plot is off to a great start.

Over seeded fall blends into bottom field.

Really enjoyed the update. Makes me miss my days of hunting eastern Kentucky back in the 90’s-good times!

Places looks great and the table is set and it looks like you have some nice guests to be expected as well! Looks like they are big fans of the soybeans.

Annual hunt trip was from October 23rd until 30th. Past two years of trail cam pictures led us to believe we’d have a decent hunt. NOT THE CASE! I saw one deer from the stand all week, a 140 class 3.5yo that I missed at 40yds. Buddy only saw a doe and then a monster. My dad saw ZERO all week. Pretty sure this is another case of aliens sucking all the deer up!
Acorns were thin at best but the only deer seen did happen to be in areas that were holding the most acorns. Food plots weren’t being used at all!
Did have daylight pictures of Slammer earlier on. These pictures will have G all worked up since they resemble what he’s about to get into.

Will be back at it in December!

Winter 2019 - TSI.jpgAll the aerials that G has been posting of his neighboring property made me realize I haven't even provided one on this thread.Property boundary is in red, with a stream aka branch, forming the bottom western boundary. The diagonal central drainage also holds water year round. The grey lines mark planned 2019 TSI/hinge-cut project areas. The two being about 4ac each (not to scale) and the line being about an acre on the south facing slope below the Honey Hole food plot. The project seems attainable this winter and I think is sized correctly for the first attempt. Definitely not trying to hack and cut everything but the past few years have shown that addressing these 3 areas can only help at this point. Staying away from what we believe is the Slammer's preferred bedding area and if these project areas become bedding areas they are still far enough away and up-wind (prevailing) from stand locations.

Good luck with the TSI. I’ll be out doing some post season scouting soon.

Eastern KY was hit really hard with EHD. We just found one dead buck last fall (2017), but smelled a few dead deer we didn’t find. Areas east of us were really bad. Several counties had over 200 reported cases and one over 500. There’s a report available on the fish and wildlife website.

Good to see you posting up Anthony. I saw that cabin on Google earth and wondered if that was yours. Good luck with your habitat this week. I'm back in MI this morning but hope to meet up with you soon down there.

I was pulling and saving those weekly reports during 2017. Never found any dead deer during my intrusive winter walkabouts but obviously doesn't mean there weren't any around me. I had consistent pictures of the bucks and does on my property until well after the first frost so I think my little herd did okay. If you read the results of my 2018 season, you could definitely see where 2017 may have come into play. Finally heading back out to the property this weekend with a full crew. Will see what the cameras and boots on the ground tell us, fingers crossed.

Sounds good, we'll stay in touch.

Whippoorwill - Have you got any more pics of the one-eyed buck? Curious if he made it thru the season. Enjoying your thread!

Negative, not since December 2017. Think his disappearance is why “Slammer,” became established on the property. Each time on the property makes a new memory but I don’t think I’ll ever stop thinking of that deer.

Well it’s been 4 years since I posted and probably almost as long since I checked up on the forum. I have barely hunted but have managed to keep my fruit trees thriving and maintained the food plots. Its been way too long so I am recommitting to the habitat work and spending more time in the woods. I have started a successful charter fishing operation in North Carolina so feel free to share with any of your fishing buddies. D27756EE-C0ED-43BC-85B0-1D17DF715286.jpeg
