I'll take spice bush over jap bush honeysuckle any day! I have a few spice bush plants around, but I don't see a lot of wildlife value to them. A few diversity is fine, but if you have a lot of them...you may want to think some out and plant some other native shrubs suitable to your conditions. Dogwoods, and elderberry come to mind...

I've watched deer targeting spicebush. I used to have a video I took of does hammering the leaves as they yellowed in October.
I have no problem with the stuff. Better that privet, Bush Honeysuckle or a dozen others.

Elderberry! I'm with you on this one, there is absolutely no other shrub or bush in the US that can outdo elderberry for deer browsing or pies. But if anyone wants to start some make sure you use wire, or the deer will bring them to an early demise.
