The more I think about it that’s probably not it. I’ve just never seen that style of tree damage and it’s in a woods that’s infested with woodpeckers to a scale I’ve never seen before also. Thought it might be cause and effect but I think the tree would heal differently

From looking at the pictures it would seem all the O's are only on one side of the tree(s)? Yes? No?
Without knowing if that's true or not, I'd guess the O's are all south facing?

Agree with Charleston. One of the Nectria cankers maybe.

The circles are on all sides of the trees. I only took a pic of a few but the woods is full of trees with that damage. Those in the pic are easy facing.

Up here our trees that look similar are caused by pileated woodpeckers, Bob

I think I'd vote woodpecker damage, a lot of woodpeckers. I don't see worms doing that much damage.
