Hey, i will introduce myself properly as soon as i am home. So iam a relatively new Hunter with only 5 deer under my belt and alot of small game. I just has the craziest thing happen and i need some advice.
So i was hunting roe deer last week with my 222rem and botched a shot, the deer didnt react and kept grazing and i figured oh well live and let live i still have moose in the fridge, better check my rifle first altho i know i pulled the shot. Rifle turned out fine.
Now i encountered a limping deer in the same spot and realised i hit its rear leg. So i shoot from 70m to the chest. No reaction, i shoot again, no reaction, i shoot again, a flinch but it slowly limps away. i gave it 5 minutes and carefully looked at the impact site, there is no blood but alot a clear trail. Following the trail the deer bolts from a ditch and crashes trough the brush, and it seems it layed down again 30-40m from me in the dark. Should i go home first? what makes a deer not react to so many shots. I doubt i missed a single ond, with a checked rifle, from 70m, trough a scope from a rest.... for now iam sitting down with my ears open, it cant really get away from here without making a lot of noise due to the crispy snow and dense brush.
