The Massey

I need to hook you up some acorns. We shot a ton of doves last weekend, didn't take time to see if any seeds were ready to drop. Will check this weeknd.

That's a good lookin load in the bed of the truck! Only one thing looks better back there and that's fur-n-feathers.

Sounds great Cat, keep me posted on what you find. If it works out schedule-wise, I'd love to attempt to knock down a few doves!

Was going to see if you wanted to this weekend but I'm going to end up working calves instead.

Got a little plot work done the last couple days. This is the view of the barn plot from above. The green on the right is brassicas planted last month. The newly worked ground is last fall’s brassica plot, now going to cereals, clover, and chicory. The rest of it is cereals thrown and mown into established clover.

Kept the tractor busy here lately. Had to take it to the “tractor hospital” for a minor fix recently.

Here’s a look at the 1/2 acre plot on the other side of the creek. Did a throw and mow into established clover there as well. The Massey is now done plot wise; now I’ll move on to a few spots we have permission on.

The rain came! I took the day off and hopped on the tractor. As I was unloading a neighbor farmer drove by looking at me like I was crazy — no cab on our tractor! :) I managed to get our biggest plot spread, and a smaller one as well a few miles away. Both of these clover plots didn’t have much for mulch, so I’m not going to mow them. Hopefully it works out. Adjusting the gate on the seeder constantly about wore me out; the rain made it a circus. If I did much of that, I’d bungee a tarp over it.

I’m liking the early signs after throwing into established clover; we seeded just 5 days ago.
Looks like fun, huh?

The deer didn’t seem to mind the intrusion

I took a look at the plot today. This picture is taken in the bare spot of the above photo, where I’ve been dropping some corn in front of the camera. The rye especially is really taking off.

Took my nephews over to the Massey today to get a couple scrape branches set up on the plots.

The big plot below the barn is looking pretty good. There’s a brassica section coming in good, it has some Johnson grass, but the temps will soon take care of it. The deer are hitting the radishes pretty hard already, but leaving the rape and turnips alone. The worked plot is cereals and clover. And the biggest area the established clover with cereals broadcast into it. It’s hard to tell what is coming up in it.

The plan is to get 5 or 6 straw bales and make a blind by the disk. It has worked pretty well in years past.

Dawna, Addison, and I had quite an evening, we headed over to the Massey to deer watch out of the barn for the first time since June. Audrey decided to stay home, she’s more of a shooter than a watcher. :D The farmer got the last of the corn out yesterday, so we can see again! We saw too many deer to count including a real nice buck that came out too late to see anymore than his frame. Here’s a couple pics from the evening.

Dawna and I headed over to the Massey this afternoon for one final touch-up before we begin hunting. Hopefully this blind will do the trick. We’ll have to use it kind of like a ghost blind; stay low, draw and ease up to the sight window for the shot.

There are two big scrapes already under the scrape branch. This guy was the culprit when it came to breaking the branch. No shooters are visiting the branch as of yet, hopefully that will change soon.

A couple pretty interesting looking prospects at the place we just got permission on a few weeks ago. We got a nice throw and mow spot prepared and seeded. Just need some rain, maybe tomorrow?

Sat this evening for the first time this fall. I wasn’t really planning to head to the Massey, but we don’t have the blind up yet at another spot we hunt and the north wind limited options a bit. I ended up in the back foodplot, mainly because it is bordered by some big red oaks that have dropped a ton of acorns. Unfortunately, reception at the farm isn’t the best, so when I hunt there, I won’t be able to update on the live thread. It was a great sit, I saw 13 deer. Several does, small bucks, and 3 nicer bucks that got to sparring pretty hard at last light. Even with the acorns, some of the deer were hitting the clover/cereal grains pretty hard.
Could have taken quite a few pics, but didn’t want to get busted.
Here’s a pic of one of the little guys chowing down.

We have a family camping trip this weekend, we’ll racing home in time to winterize the camper Sunday. The cold is coming... The next opportunity for me to be in a tree is Tuesday afternoon, some forecasts are calling for snow!

What are you using to hold the branch inside the pole on your scrape set ups? I have a few places I want to give this a shot

I drilled at 1” hole all the way through the landscape timber with a paddle bit, then ran the end of the branch through and ran a screw through the branch to keep it in the hole. Got the idea from Midwestwhitetail a couple years ago.

Sat in the disk/hay blind yesterday evening and didn't see much. Addison was in the barn behind me; she told me as we walked out, a deer got downwind of me in the south field and spooked about a half hour before sundown. I never would have known it.

We got the real haybale blind set up yesterday afternoon; and I'm grateful, considering it's SNOWING now. I hope to hope in it if this NE wind persists tomorrow evening.
