I like to... run mineral licks next to my plots. I don't get too carried away because I believe most of today's products are created to separate hunters from their money and nothing more. However, I will throw out a couple of Trophy Rocks at each plot. The local whitetails do utilize them some. A good friend just put out some Stump Licker, and I must say his trail cameras show the bucks going crazy over the stuff. Anyone here ever used it with positive results?
 
I have never used that product - I use a trace mineral block from my local farm retail store (Rural King). It's a 50 pound block and costs $6. A block will last me 6 months or better. It is primarily salt, but it does have trace minerals in it as well. I have found that mine do best near water if possible and in cover. I prefer to set the block on a cut tree stump if possible. This limits some of the digging you see develop over time. Instead the deer actually eat the stump. I'm sure there are better products out there.....but a 50 lb block for $6 is tough to beat. I use them for camera surveys and they seem to work well for me in that role.

I use some different ones and they work. The best I have found is the Deer Cocaine blocks. White small ones. They get through them quickly but seem to get addicted and come back often.
 
+1 on the Deer Cane, although I use the Black Magic powder. I have parted money with seemingly everything from the small Crush discs (which coons love and will carry off in a hurry), to Swamp Donkey to Trophy Rocks and a dozen things in between. They all work to an extent but I like the powder cane simply from the perspective it is lightweight and I can put a bag or two in my back pack and dump them in more remote locations.
If anyone tries the Stump Licker and has unreal success, let me know ;)
 
I tried a liquid that you poured on a stump two years ago, I don't recall what brand, but it did not really produce for my trail camera. Looking back I think it was not a good spot and I think that is key for most of these products. I will second what birdgunner said about the Deer Cane Black Magic Powder (and block when I can find them). I had very good luck with a trail camera survey last spring and summer using that product but again I think it was in a very good spot. I have been using the 50# Trace Mineral block from Tractor Supply and they seem to like that too. Best bang for your buck (no pun intended)!
 
I have tried a couple of the liquid ones, a whitetail institute, frigid forage brand and trophy rock. Seem to get the best results from trophy rock.
 
Hands down best mineral attractant I have seen is Real World's Maximizer. I have a spot that has Maximizer and 5' from it has Deer Cane. They still haven't touched the Deer Cane but have ate every bit of the maximizer and have already dug a 4' round X 1' deep hole. Since first of July. I think it is a little more expensive than the more commercial minerals but from my tests it works that much better too.

I use exactly the same thing...we have had bears carry trophy rocks off so we no longer use them...
 
Hey Blizzard, just an FYI, it is illegal to use any salt or minerals in Illinois. Might not want to post to much about it. Unless you are doing it out of state

No it is used in Indiana. It is a farm on the west side of the Wabash just across the state line 1/2 mile. It is a tricky area to hunt as I have a farm just across on the Illinois side as well. For Indiana as long as not hunted over it is legal or if removed 10 days prior to hunting the area.

Yes unfortunately we can't use it in Illinois. It is an awful good tool for getting pictures in the summer. I was just talking to game warden a couple days about this and what I thought about it. Good tip though :)
 
Stump licker drew bears better than deer for us. I personally haven't seen anything that would out draw trophy rock or lucky buck. Black magic is close.
 
Thank you all... I have tried about most everything over the years but not the Stump Licker. Doesn't sound like it's getting rave reviews here even though my buddy thinks it's great. Think I'll stick with Trophy Rock.
 
After using everything from trophy rocks to deer cane I now get the same red trace mineral blocks at tractor supply for $6. When I first set one I'll dump a half bag of corn on it for the deer to find it. Once they do they keep coming back(even daily)over time it gets in the soil and they will dig a hole long after the block is gone. Last 6 months and works incredibly well

I swore by trophy rocks and I still think they work great. However this year I switched to 5 dollar trace mineral blocks from tractor supply and then i dump a lil jello or koolaid mix on top and the deer seem to like it just as well for so much cheaper.
 
I use a mineral called Pops loose moose. It's a mineral that's mostly sold in Michigan and Ohio. Best mineral I've ever used !!!
