Place looking great G. Don't really care for the snake pics tho. Get some cattle to run and your snake issue will go away for the most parts but you seem to have this love affair..... What camera and lens you using? To be honest, the iPhone takes such good pics any more I seldom pull out the camera at the farm. But never quite as good pics. The outer bands of Ida have moved in this morning with sustained winds of 0mph. I have made 0 progress on my sticks as the monsoon season has been relentless. Lots of mushrooms however, I have a big pile of chanterelles and summer oysters to cook up for breakfast. I think that I was wrong about the above pictured buck being the bigger buck from last year. They do seem to like the spot that I'm cleaning up for them.

Deer used this area, hopefully I didn't ruin it for them by cleaning it up and removing roses.







The crab apple has responded to it's new found freedom from the roses that grew on it's back.



I'm glad now that I didn't persecute all of the spice bush, it is an important plant to thrushes. I have yet to see it but it is said that bucks like to rub spicebush.





Paw paws were also released in the staging area





So the old staging area is now spicebush and paw paw.



I sprinkled wheat, rye, turnips, and rape yesterday between rains in the dead spots that I created with my squirt can. I think that this will be a good spot for deer.

Shadier areas have turned into about a half acre of poke salad.

I burned and hacked here using glyphosate in 2019



which didn't do much to stimulate greens on the forest floor.





2020 I began mulching





Now the greens along the path are about 7 foot deep.

Looks great! Heavily forested hills are completely foreign to me, but I can't imagine deer not flocking to the diversity you're bringing in to what looks like a monoculture before your arrival. Is anyone else around you doing anything similar?

Thanks Steve, I learned in Michigan a long time ago that you can't go wrong for hanging an early season stand over a poke patch and 100 acres of beans or corn across the road didn't make no difference. Delicious poisonous berries.

I always wondered if your place was in Lewis co. I’ve looked at land there a long time because of the prices knowing some of it is pretty nasty terrain. It’s also the closest Ky land to me!

I forgot to say hi and thanks Doug, 2 bandogs seem to keep the snakes at bay. My camera is a Sony, entry level good camera, alpha7III. Lens are Tamron 28-75mm 2.8, and 150-500mm 5-6.7

I did a 5 hour shift yesterday cleaning up my sticks and spreading out 100lb of lime and 75lb 6-24-24.



I went back later in the day to work my fire and spread 10lb wheat, 10lb cereal rye, 2.5lb clover mix, 1/2lb rape, and 1/2lb purple tops. I previously hacked a bunch more trees around this little plot .3 acres so there will be a bigger sunny spot next year.



My stand is going up high in the big remaining maple.

I really enjoy your thread George. I don't get to burn where I am. It's neat to see your spots progress through it. You got me thinking to start making some piles and do some winter burning.

George...Bet some of your neighbors think you're nuts with the hacking, cutting and fire going on up there. Looking dang good! I took off last week and spent 4 days at the farm prepping for fall. Mowed all interior roads, fields in prep for planting and did one sho nuff deep clean on the cabin. While cleaning, I opened a box and there laid the knife you made years ago. Seems like a lifetime ago when the old forum was running wide open and you were attacking AO and MFR on your Iowa property. Keep swinging brother!
