Beech is known as a tough wood to dry and since we have basically our choice of what to use I stay away from beech logs and of course elm as well. The lack of commercial markets for either is kind of a hint that it has problems. The grain on your beech looks so perfect one would think it would dry evenly but that is not the case that I know of. My experience with it was limited though.

I wouldn't plant too much ragweed seed or let it go to seed, it will come up the next year thicker than fescue.

I usually don't pay much attention to e-mails from Oikos but I did this time, potted Dolgos 50% sale. I ordered 10 3-4', I just ordered 12 more 2-3', they were out of 3-4'. Time to make cages.

My new tool arrived yesterday, an alpha 7 III. The lens arrived a few days ago. Today I'm trying to figure out how to operate it. I bought it with free Dogecoin money.

I've been in and out of doggie probably 6 times in the past 30 days and if it weren't for a down day across the board I would be bailing out right now to protect gains.

Outside of my land investments it would seem that my strategy historically has been to buy high and sell low with no plan to jump a sinking ship.

I ended up up selling off most my doggies and put it in ethereum. Then doggie spiked back up yesterday, so did ethereum so I'm almost back up to where I was before the crash. I'll buy more doggies.

I'm finally cleaning up my yard as I'm just now getting some of the ice storm burned up.



As I look around I see that the flowers are all getting browsed off. It is good to see that deer can come back again and eat. For some reason the neighbor's dog pack hasn't been seen deer hunting my land as of late.



I was dropping a couple of crabs yesterday in the top of the bottom plot. Where tank hasn't eaten all of the turnips I maintain a self perpetuating brassica/clover plot.



Where the clover meets the roses it seems that roses and joe pye are the preferred browse.










With a ton of clover almost 2' deep I had to look closer to see that the deer do eat clover too.





I'm growing my first pear in KY this year.

Me too. I started these plots two years ago by cutting out the trees and brush, mowing, spraying, and then applying seeds. I sprinkled out some lime and fert the first year too.

Trial and error. I found a bean yesterday



and that was it. The whole area has been scratched up by turkeys and is loaded with turkey poop. Any beans that I found last week have been removed.



So my new strategy for the area is permaculture



and I started that yesterday with my Dolgo crabs.



Here I have a wonderful seeding of clover mix





underneath a full canopy of maples that I hacked and squirted before leaf out. I'm going back up today with the hack hammer and special sauce to try to save my planting.



Here I have a maple that I hacked lower down on the root collar after it was starting to leaf out



and with much better results.



Here I have two maples hacked on the same day lower on the tree after they started to leaf out. So it appears that hack and squirt is a mixed bag and an ongoing process.

We shall see my hack hammer will be putting in some overtime this summer. I believe that I just need to hold my pants on, the previously hacked trees that leafed out are probably dead trees walking. When I put the hack hammer into some of them yesterday I noticed they had a different tone. Their bark layers seem to be unhealthy.
