Apparently I’m in a good region for sawtooth landscape plantings. I’ve scouted four areas with ~75 trees; drop times from early September-?

Some look like they won’t drop for another month or so.

I have some trees about that size that are around 10 and they are producing.I actually had burs start producing before sawtooths that were planted the same day as bareroot seedlings

I don’t think the smaller trees could be more than ten, some of them are producing hundreds of acorns this year. The bigger trees at another location are probably closer to 20 years old. I will try to find out.

Our trees in central Alabama (some planted 2006, others planted 2013) are LOADED. Ive only had one barren year

I confirmed the sawtooth oaks on one of my best collection sites were planted in 2011-2012. I’m not sure how old they were at that time but they’re 15-25’ tall in 2021 and each produces hundreds of acorns.

Google earth is amazing

The younger trees I’m collecting from went in the ground in 2016. Again, it’s hard to say how old they were at time of planting. Trees are 12-15’ and producing a heavy crop this year.

Odds are they weren’t seedlings. I’d guess probably a 3-4 year old tree.

That’s my guess. I’m picturing 5-6’ nursery stock.

Either way, these trees are less than 10 years old with impressive production in a concrete jungle. Plenty of sun.

That’s crazy. I went down to our woods today and found one acorn on one of the trees. There are 6-7 trees down there and all are 9 years old. Only thing I can think of is that they were grown in rootmaker pots and maybe spent several of the early years rebuilding the root system after they were planted and not necessarily growing much. That and the fact they haven’t been watered since planting…Ever…. Except for what they get naturally.

I used to hunt oaks in the midwest and would love to see the deer and turkeys hitting them this time of year. I have to try and plant some of these in Kansas next spring. I'll be pretty grey when they start producing but have to get after it now. Impressive pictures!
