SAVAGE 220 BOLT ACTION SLUG GUN VS STRAIGHTWALL CALIBERS

Good thoughts. The 6.5 Creedmoor isn't straight wall though. I already have several 7mm08's for youth hunters, and the 7mm08 holds a slight edge on the 6.5 in every respect except benchrest target competitions.
I'm still thinking about the straighwall offerings...
Yeah. I know you're in PA, and there aren't any straight wall mandates here, except maybe for a few state parks, or something fringe. Do you need straight wall, or just interested in them?

Pennsylvania has allowed the use of straight-walled centerfire cartridges for deer hunting within the state's special regulations areas where it was shotgun only, before the new regs came out. 5 counties are included, which is a significant area;
  • Allegheny County
  • Bucks County
  • Chester County
  • Delaware County
  • Montgomery County
We mostly do some hunting in Chester County.

I have both the Savage 220 and a CVA Scout chambered for the 450BM. Both are great rifles but the CVA is way better and in my opinion kicks about the same. With the 220 you have to keep the plastic fouling out of the barrel or it will destroy your accuracy. Brownells sells a shotgun wad cleaner that works well. I found that 5 shots is the limit but I always cleaned after 3 shots.

I got my best accuracy with the 3inch Remington Accutips. The 220 is chambered for a 3inch shell so it will usually shoot better than a 2 3/4, not always, if the slug doesn't have to "jump" the chamber gap. There are people who will disagree with this but I have found that for me and my 220 3inch Accutips shoot the best.

450BM ammo is pretty cheap compared to 5 slugs! My CVA Scout was just under $400 and boy does it shoot.

I've been kicked full in the ribs with both hind feet by a horse, I thought I was going to meet my maker. It hurt more than $800.

Easy now, I told you that I'm still looking for my first job out of college. Did you have broken ribs and a collapsed lung? Just teasing of course, however, I did take a similar thumping from a young colt onetime to the sternum. It put me on my back and to this day I've never tried to catch another horse by the ass end.

I kind of forget that special regulation areas are around. The only local (Montco) deer hunting I do is Flintlock.

I bought this well built CVA Scout in 44 MAG for less than $400. and mounted a Bushnell Dusk & Dawn scope. Accuracy is superb at 100 yards shooting Hornady Lever-evolution ammo. 44 MAG hits very hard within typical woods hunting distances. Recoil is moderate. TR

My exact mistake, getting too close to the north end of a southbound horse.
An unbroken mustang got loose from the neighbor and I thought I'd do a kindly deed and catch this mustang for him. When I grabbed his bridle he spun and yanked me horizontal tight against his hind end, then kicked with both feet, tossing me into a convenient bush. It seemed like a long time before I could get air into my lungs again. I decided right there I'd rather be a barn builder than a barn user.
