Savage 220 slug gun shooters

Do any of you have a Savage 220 slug gun. I bought one late last year and am getting it ready for this years Illinois gun season. I have a Evolution Gun Works mount on the way and I have a Nikon 2-7 x 32 shotgun scope I plan on using. I have some questions. What height scope rings do you use? What slugs have you had good accuracy with? My manual says to use 3 inch Remington Accutips. Tell me about your Savage 220 setup (scope, mounts, rings, slugs etc.) likes or dislikes.

I have a 220 and love it. It is nearly as accurate as a centerfire rifle. I can't remember exactly what type of scope mounts I have but they are medium height Weaver style with a Zeiss 3X9 scope. I wish I had followed Savage's suggestion for the slugs right off the bat as I tried about 5 different brands and found that the 3" Accutips were the best for my gun. The only thing that you need to be aware of is that it takes more force to eject the spent shell when you work the bolt than a standard bolt action rifle. Just work the bolt with authority and you will be fine.

While this may sound silly, polishing the bolt with an old toothbrush with toothpaste on it may help.

I think all the 220's are this way. A spent plastic shell casing just doesn't want to flip out of the gun like a heavier brass rifle casing would. You just have to snatch the bolt a little harder and faster. It takes a little getting used to but is not a big deal.

I have one, its nice, it has a 3x9 leupold on it. I bought the accutips for it, I had some SST's I used to sight it in and they shot great out of it so, that's all we've used. My son has shot 3 deer with it and all 3 dropped where he shot them. As far as the bolt, I thought it was fine, I never noticed any issues with it

Evolution Gun Works one-piece rail, Warne Maxima (permanent Weaver style) rings in low, Leupold VXII 3-9x40mm. With the EGW one-piece I really like low rings. Cut the rail short and blue it if you have to, rather than go to medium rings. I've had the best performance out of the 3" Remington Accutips but have shot a 220 that definitely seemed to prefer the Barnes. Just remember to let that barrel cool between shots when testing slugs.

Remington accutips for mine as well. Tried about 5 different slugs. I would put more scope on it than a 2x7 though. I put the Leupold ML scope on mine with the long range markings. I can shoot a sub 3" group at 200 yards all day.
