Pruned a crazy growing pear today

I planted this Orient Pear in spring of ‘15. It was a burlap wrapped bare root that I purchased from a local farm store. Last year this tree went absolutely nuts with all the new woody growth. Did some major pruning on it. I will be curious to see what it does this year.

Do all pears grow straight up? I pruned a few today and they just don't seem to spread out. Maybe can get away with tighter spacing than apple trees?

Pears grow conical.

The tendency is for most to grow mostly vertical, though there are some varieties that have much better branch angles; such as Parker and VA Wild.
