Protecting new planted fruit trees??

See if this works for you... I tend to cover the weed barrier with gravel...and NOT mulch. I have had issues with voles in the mulch and they then chew off all the support roots and thus kill the tree. I just get gravel from a stream. Don't forget to tag the tree/cage or you will forget what it is or when you planted it (experience talking right here). I do this with my fruit trees and other container trees. Some use 2 posts as well....I have not had a need to thus far.

Thanks again guys for all the good ideas. I was looking at rolls of concrete wire and maybe fiberglass poles so I good electrify them then too.

Electrified cages?!@?? I like the idea, probably sure the are off the ground and you keep the weeds down. I'm curious to see this works for you.

On the tree tagging thing that jbird brought up... I just make an orchard map on a document. I put the trees in order on a chart with notes: year planted, where they were purchased from, when they bloom, when they drop, etc. I also color code them and make note of spray treatment or problems observed. It's been easier and more informative than when I tried to keep tags on them. I am considering plates on stakes like you would find in a nature center or arboretum too. It seems people are always asking "what's this or how old is that"?
