I planted 8 trees last year that were 7 foot tall. I figured since there wasnt any branches that deer can reach I'd be fine just tubing them. The bucks rubbed 3 of the tubes off the trees and rubbed the trees. I know 2 are dead for sure... one was showing some signs of life this spring. They all got cages this spring... Lesson learned.

Apple trees get 5'-6' diameter 5' tall welded wire fence with 3 t-fence posts. Hardwood trees get 12"-18" diameter of 5' tall welded wire fence, on one t-fence post.

I make chestnut cages much smaller then fruit cages. Fruit trees often have lower branches that need space; I want chestnuts to grow vertically before they branch out. Cages are expensive and time consuming, but I prefer them over tubes. That said, all you need the cage to do is protect a tree from a deer rubbing it...it does not have to be 5 feet in diameter to do that.

This is what I do for my hard mast trees too. I’ve also doubled up 3’ tall tubes to make a cheap option to protect the trees from rubbing and browsing deer.

Yeah I wasn’t planning on buying anymore trees but to good of price not to,it’s been extremely hot by the time I got done planting them I was whipped. I have the post and fence to put around the trees but the deer beat me to them. I guess the alfalfa\clover plot, Ag soybeans and deer feeder wasn’t enough of a food selection for them lol

Nothing is ever enough for browsers....variety is their spice of life.

I just got back from the farm for the first time since early spring... and 8 of the 9 chestnuts I planted last year have died. ARRGGGHHH... all 35 of my apple and pear trees are doing great. I was forced to plant the chestnuts in June and did my best to water them throughout the summer to get them through, but I guess it wasnt enough.
