Proposed Oklahoma Deer hunting changes.

In PA we are legally allowed to shoot dogs that are chasing deer, although the game commission recommends using extreme discretion.

The only defense to prosecution for shooting dogs here is if they are attacking livestock, pets, or humans. I can’t say I always agree with that but it is what it is.

Shooting a dog nowadays is worse than shooting a person in some folks eyes. I am still of a mind if you love your animal that much then you would certainly take measures to make sure it remains at home unless you are out there with it...

This year Florida implemented a 5-Deer a year Limit.

Prior to that we had a 2-deer per DAY limit.

In Archery you could take two Does or One Doe and One Buck or Two Bucks per day.

Ml was two Bucks per Day.

General Gun was Two Bucks per day unless it was during the Doe Days where the same rules as Archery were in effect.

The locals lost their minds.

The FWC first proposed a 5-Buck Limit, with no Does but that would get any support from locals. They ended up with a 5-Deer Limit with no more than 2 can be Doe.

It takes 6 Does to raise a 6-point Buck here. That’s what the stats say. By taking so many deer year after year it is no wonder why the herd here is in terrible shape. Those born here that have never known anything else are still crying about the new limit. They want to take 10-30 deer each every year.

Time will tell the result but it looks like a fairly large group supports the move. Those that are complaining about being tagged out already are being told to be more selective.

I’d say in maybe five years the attitude may change. For now it’s a tough sell.

Two deer a day ! Unreal ! I’ve heard about those limits several years ago, seems like several states close to you had the same type limits.

My concern is, I wonder if states that allow a hunter to take multiple antlered deer per license year aren't putting junior hunters at somewhat of a disadvantage? The class of hunters who have the most difficulty filling their buck tag are junior hunters, and in those multiple tag states an expert hunter going for their second (or 3rd, 4th) buck instead of taking a youngster out, or, instead of letting that second 6 point alive for a junior to take a crack at it, is creating an unfair playing field for new hunters. Young hunters need opportunities to fill their tag or their interests will soon turn to other things.
In PA, a one buck per year state, we have more more licensed hunters per sq mile than any other state in the country, and I attribute some of it to juniors having the opportunity to fill tags. Here, since there's only one buck tag, hunters tend to be in one of two groups, those who shoot the first legal buck because they want to fill their tag asap and don't care about size, and those who enjoy long sits and wait for a trophy. Meat hunters generally shoot doe to fill their freezer. While we complain a lot about the PGC, they do put a lot of emphasis on youngsters with the different programs that they have.

Well just think of how it was before they put on a Limit?
Guys were saying they "needed" 10-15 deer a year to "feed their family". That this new Limit was just "the Government taking things away from the people".

at least a limit of 5 is letting a few live that would of been shot. Of course an Outlaw will be an Outlaw and only being caught can stop that.

Running Dogs for Deer Hunting is or was very big here. Guy tell of "daddy took me along when I was 18 months old". Of course they mean they were strapped in a Child Seat in the truck as Daddy ran up and down the roads trying to get ahead of the deer. But in their minds Daddy took them hunting and they have been hunting since they were 18 months old.

Age Limit to Hunt in another thing. I can remember just longing to be 12 yrs old so I could go along to go Hunting. Here there is no age limit and there are pics posted of their 4-6 yr old shooting their deer. I don't honestly know how a 4 yr old can hold a rifle, aim it accurately and pull the trigger when it's on the right spot to cleanly kill a deer. I think a lot of it is done with Dad setting up the gun in a Quad Pod or similar deal then Jr Slides in and pulls the trigger.
Saw a video where Dad did all the aiming and had the boy pull the trigger then said "he was so proud of him, boy you just got a 8-point!". Dad was ecstatic, Kid didn't even know what he was doing.

It was 14 for me to bowhunt, 16 for rifle. I wish the age limit would come back. That longing is important for development.

There’s a lot of that here also. I see lots of posts on TBH about 6/7 year old kids killing deer. I personally think that’s a little young, but to each his own when it comes to knowing when your kid is ready.

My youngest killed his first turkey at age 8, but he practiced with his 20 gauge H&R quite a bit on a turkey target before doing so. He practiced with low velocity 2 3/4” shells with the gun on shooting sticks until he was comfortable with it. When he actually got a chance to shoot a turkey he never noticed the 3” magnum recoil.

Sometimes I have to wonder if those bucks killed on “youth weekend” are really killed by the youths.

It will be interesting to see what you think about the increased doe harvest in a few years. In our little corner of the NC Appalachian mountains we’re allowed 2 bucks and 4 does. I don’t know any locals that regularly shoot does but they all seem to need to feel those buck tags for some reason.

Our 2 week muzzle loader and 6 week rifle season (during the rut) make it possible to shoot whatever you want.

NC is proposing to make deer urine as an attraction outlawed for hunting. I don’t use it and really could care less.

OK isn't operating in a bubble. The herd reduction is on across the whole country. Whether it's money for the deer, or money for what the deer are eating, they have no ally in business or government.

And that 10 DPSM is BS number pulled outta thin air. That's the same number they gave us in MN. Parrots don't think, they just parrot.

I agree with that no ally comment. I’m Indiana the farm lobby and the insurance lobby seem to have more say than hunters. With the exception of implementing a one buck rule, every rule change in the last 10 years has been more permissive for killing deer.

I saw this first hand in Iowa as my tenure there was during the transition in deer management from deer biologists to the Governor. As Swat mentioned it doesn't take long to screw things up. All else considered it comes down to a numbers game.

I wish we would go to 1 buck...
As I understand it. The proposed season will be 6 deer, only one can be a buck. I think that’s for bow,ML and gun. Gun season will run from November 21 2020 to December 13 2020. And they can open season on does on public lands any time after the season ends if they feel it’s needed. And it won’t count against your total of 6. We have until January 3 to voice our opinions.
And they are also making hog hunting at night legal even with lights and thermal imaging scopes. You have to text the ranger in the county and have signed permission on you from the land owner.

It’s still a 2 buck limit for the year...you can only kill 1 with a rifle and or a muzzleloader during their season. Bow will be unchanged...the deal is they are adding 3 more does to your rifle tag and an extra week to do it all...

Hmm. If that passes it will be interesting to see where the zones will be set. That’s going to cause an uproar in a lot of places. So basically the way it is now in most zones its 1 buck and 2 doe in both gun and ML. Now they want to change it to 1 buck for both ML and gun. That sounds ok but I’m not sure how many hunters that will effect.

No...the bucks are going to be same as always so far which means a limit of 2 bucks for the entire year. Nothing changes for the bucks. It is supposedly just going from a rifle season and muzzleloader limit of 3 deer total to a total of 6 deer and adding an extra week for the rifle season. You can still kill 1 buck with a rifle and 1 with a muzzleloader for your 2 bucks or you can kill both with a bow or use a combination of 1 with bow and 1 with rifle or muzzleloader...

What I was hoping for was just 1 buck a year total, 5 does total, and a 9 day rifle and 9 day muzzleloader season total With bow season running Oct 1 - Dec 31. Deer season completely done by Jan 1.

Well it looks like overwhelming hunter comments not in favor of the extension of rifle season has won out this time. Now they are looking into ways of killing more does in the allotted seasons we have. Most of our regional directors have insurance backgrounds for some reason and killing the herd off to keep from paying out auto claims seems to be the driving force...I noticed they just replaced a retiring regional director with another insurance guy...

I saw that in the email that went out. I thought the same thing about the regional director. That’s a little worrisome

Sad for you. We are, or should say were, in the same boat. When I moved into my current house in 2008, I counted 54 deer yarded up in the section east of me. In 2009, very similar, in the 50s. Last night there were 14 in the same field, and that's the most I've seen in one group here in 5 years. Indiana is in the crapper, due to the farm/insurance lobby. It's not all that, you can throw in mismanagement by our DNR's one size fits the whole state management plan.

Our harvest numbers have been dropping every year even though lots of additional days and harvest opportunities...that should tell them how our deer population is doing...
