Did not realize you could keep the feeders full during season and hunt over them. Alabama Game and Wildlife finally gave in to all the corn being used and allows the bait, but it must be 100 yards from hunter and not in sight. That get's tricky.

baiting in Ohio has been legal for as long as I can recall. I would be ok if they made it illegal. The issue you have is that so many people do bait, use feeders, etc. That if you are not doing it, boy you are gunna have a hard time patterning deer unless you have a stupid high deer density area.

Example: One of my neighbors sees 10-12 does a night. The other didn't see that many all season.... Neighbor seeing all those deer is running 5 feeder to supplement his food plots as well.

Hope you finish season in style Buck. Plots look good. I haven't' hunted corn for years but it is an attractions and a volatile conversation for many. I do know it can be successful in hunting big woods like you and I do. It hunts best if you back off 100 yds or so from the corn. Mature deer tend to know its dangerous stuff but will scent check for doe at a distance. I've shot a few that way. Good luck.

ya it is just one of those things. I don't like to hunt over it all that much. However, I do hunt a lot of trails to them. It has come to a realization of mine that there is no way to draw deer on a regular basis without corn, if your neighbors are running corn like crazy person.

I don't have an issue either way. I actually have the feeders to run for only about 3-4 seconds. It is amazing how long these new feeders run at that rate. I think the one said it'll run for 175 days!

Just ordered 10 trees during the NATIV NURSERY SALE. I will be planting deer pear and deer crab apples the last week of this month. Planning to tube them, and see how they do!

Man I tell you what you have a good group of young bucks hanging around.. I bet on our 500 we don't have that many bucks in one area hitting the feeder like that..

But I 100% agree with everything that's been said... I truly believe the main reason why hunting over bait in Ohio is legal is because of SE Ohio being so difficult to hunt because of terrain and hardwoods.. if you didn't bait you would rarely get an opportunity at a deer!
But like you said we have been putting our feeders on the edge of our food plots with short timers so they just come in to eat a little corn then walk around the plot a bit

As for mature bucks and feeders I agree they tend to always wait till dark to come up to them but if you got does hitting the feeder in the daytime all you got to do is sit it during rut and those bucks will follow the does in to it

Here is my thought process on this. SE Ohio is hard to hunt because of baiting. You hear guys complain a lot about low deer numbers. I have been one of those guys. However, when really considering how many guys bait, it makes you wonder; are the deer numbers low or are the deer spread out?

I believe that if Ohio outlawed baiting and guys listened to that law. The hunting would be hard but your plots would have a great draw. The deer would pattern more to natural movement as well.

Now I say all of this without any proof. I am not anti baiting(part of me enjoys it). I have just come to the realization that if you want to compete with neighbors, keep deer around, and hunt smaller tracts of land, you need to have feeders.

I agree, I don't believe they help you kill mature deer. However, if you have 3 feeders on a property and 3 does are eating at them every night like clockwork. As you have eluded too in other posts, your RUT hunting just got a lot more intense!

Yea I agree! I definitely think the deer are extremely spread out in SE Ohio.. it would be interesting to see what happened if no one baited but like you said small property's almost have to bait! But it would definitely help out the food plots!

As far as deer population being low I mean we have hunted the farm for 25 years and I remember opening day of gun season it would sound like world war 3 and we would get about 5 deer on the first day and probably kill 10 total throughout the gun season and we didn't know half what we were doing back then and it went on like that for atleast 15 years I would say and we would do a lot of driving and we didn't baited back then too.. I'd say the last 7-8 we just weren't producing the deer like we used to during drives.. we weren't seeing near as many deer and we decided to stop driving deer as much and hunt smarter.. well the last 5 years we were lucky to kill 4 deer a year total compared to 10+ just in gun season... so idk we used to be able to tag like 6 deer down there and now it's dropped to 2? So I think SE Ohio just got hunted soo hard there for years that the population is trying to rebound.. dropping the bag limit to 2 deer now will definitely help tho.. I'd say give it a couple years and we won't hear as many people complain

I agree 100% I think the deer numbers are going to increase, but it will take time. Below is a scenario I have ran through in my head numerous times. What are your thoughts?

If you have 10 does and they all have 1 fawn then you have 20 deer. However, lets say half of them are bucks. You have 15 does, not lets say coyotes/bobcat/road kill/bush hog killed 3 of the 10 fawns and 2 were does and 1 was a buck fawn. Now we are only looking at the reproductive deer.

With that being said, now before deer season even starts you have 11 does from your original 10 that you had the year before. Now what happens if that year the neighbors shoot 3 does of that 11, you start the next year with only 8 does.

As you can see although people think they are really laying off the deer, the numbers don't lie. It will take awhile to build the herd, especially on smaller properties.

I hope this make sense.

Unless your nutrition is extremely poor, it is most common for does to give birth to two fawns. Often, we see does in late summer with only one fawn, I suspect due to the predation scenario. Chainsaw has does in his area that give birth to triplets. I would say that unless your herd is all immature does, you are not giving their reproductive capability enough credit.

Very good point. I'm being very conservative. My point is you can see how hard it is to grow a herd and how easy it can be to decimate it. IMO.

The DNRs don't have an easy job!

Looks like you've been busy buckhunter! I always have a feeder or two out but rarely hunt close to them. Most of the bucks come in after dark. I have great luck getting pictures over them. All the bucks I've killed have been about as far away from the feeders as I could get. I have great luck hunting pinch points late October/early November.

Looks like you've got a good group for next year. Good luck with them!

That buck I was telling you about that was south east of Cincinnati got killed this season. I think he was over 200". I'll try to find a picture for you if you haven't already seen it.

Here he is. Tough to see some of the points. Lots of mass and tine length.

Back in a stand tonigh. I deff can't be blamed for trying hard. Let's see what happens.

Sit number one million. Hahaha
Bucks are shedding antlers around our place right now. How long do they hold them there? Have you ever killed a buck this late in the season?

Back to your deer numbers...do you guys have crop damage permits? I think those permits affect our numbers as much or more than any hunting season. BTW I think your population increase numbers would be very conservative for here. Your DNR were at our hunting show begging to hunt Ohio. Deer and turkey everywhere they say.
