Oak id?

A parking lot tree. Two yrs in a row that it was loaded with acorns during Christmas shopping. Would be nice to have a December dropper!<br />Anyone know what it is?<br />

It's a hybrid red oak of some sort. We have the same trees here in our parking lot and even though reds aren't supposed to produce year after year they certainly do here and heavy!

The stripes make me think there is pin oak in the red hybrid

I picked some up, have 37 sinkers to play with. I'm not familiar with oak hybrids; how true to parent do they tend to reproduce?
These nuts are much larger than our native red/Pin oaks... and much later dropping. Having a group of December droppers would sure fill a gap I have for mast production.

It is a plain old run of the mill Black Oak.

I was thinking black oak all the way, but the bark doesnt say black oak. Maybe it's the picture. And the fact that it was planted there makes it more unlikely to be a black oak.
If i had to lay down a bet, I'd say Schumard.

Ok, is either the shumard or the black oak loved/hated by deer? I don't think I any experience with either of them. Probably doesn't matter a lot what they taste like, if I have acorns in December they will probably flock to them.

Shumard is the Native red oak in our area. The oaks we have in the parking lot at work are not shumard or black. They are a hybrid red oak from a nursery...

I collected acorns and will plant them. Now I'm just curious what to expect.

Picked up a couple of new ones to try while land cruising around my in-laws they are reds I know for sure, but not quite sure what varieties they are. Looks like my finds are an Overcup and Black oak, with so many variations in oaks I am not positive a person can ever be 100% sure on a lot of them.
