My Daughter Got a Good’n

Two days before Thanksgiving my daughter comes home from college to go Deer hunting. We try to hunt a few times together every year. On our farm there are two bucks on the hit list. We were set up overlooking a food plot of oats and brassicas. The Deer had been hammering it pretty good the last two weeks. One of the hit list bucks had been visiting this food plot in afternoons close to sunset.
We didn’t see any deer until about 30 minutes before sunset. Three does. Then another doe. It was getting dark fast. Finally, with only five minutes or so of shooting light left, we saw a large bodied deer emerge from the tree line and head towards the food plot. It was not the buck we expected, but it was “Kicker”, the other buck on our hit list! Kicker came in the food plot and began to feed. My daughter couldn’t shoot yet because of some standing sunflowers on the edge of the field. Finally, Kicker took a couple of steps and she made a great 130 yard shot. The buck only ran about 30 yards. Awesome how this hunt worked out!

Thanks Chainsaw! I got a lot of pictures of this Deer two years ago. He was a basic eight point with one kicker coming off his left side then. Last year I never got a picture of him and I figured he was dead. This year I started getting pictures of him in July and it was obvious our farm was his home range. Funny how deer come and go like that. I’m guessing he’s 4 1/2 years old. Maybe all the habitat improvement is paying off!

Thanks everybody. It’s been an unusually great deer hunting year for us. I took the other buck on our hit list Dec 11....Mr. Wide. He’s an old Warrior that I’ve been watching for several years.

Thanks. He was a solid 9 pt two years ago. He went back to an 8 pt last year but his brow tines have never checked up. They’ve grown some each year.

Thanks Mennoniteman...I’ve got a lot of pictures of this deer going back to 2014. Assuming he was 2 1/2 in 2014, and he was at least that, then he would would have been 6 1/2 this season. So I’m saying he was 6 1/2 - 7 1/2.
