I've got MFR growing in a swamp on my on property, very soggy soil conditions. The stuff is very adaptable to conditions. Thanks for that Native! Sure sounds like MFR to me, especially the fountain shape and red/green cane color as well as its propensity to climb trees. One positive I noticed is that it says "does not do well in wet soils", so I guess I don't have to worry too much about it taking over the whole place. This particular bush is up on the higher ground alongside the road, which it also says is a common location. So, in adding all that up it has me strongly leaning toward MFR. Flowers should be a telltale sign in the coming weeks.

I grew up hunting Southern Chester County and you 100 percent correct. Cant count have many thickets I've had to crawl through as a kid.MFR - such a hated crop. Yet the best deer hunting in Chester, Bucks, and Montgomery county Pennsylvania is in thick stands of MFR. The deer just thrive in that stuff, mix in some greenbriars and you've got some of the best deer food and cover that there is. But it's still hateful stuff.
I've also dragged many a deer out of MFR mixed with other briars in So.Chester county. A great place to hunt with loads of big deer, but you know it's going to be a long night when you shoot one right before dark and it runs into the swamp full of MFR. You wade through that stuff in blue jeans your legs will carry scars for a week.I grew up hunting Southern Chester County and you 100 percent correct. Virginia is renowned for their country smoked hams...Rather than to continue to pile on and tell you.....well, never mind. I shall remain silent until leaves leaf and flowers burst forth. Then, I will declare a winner! And what kind of Virginia produced goodies would you like? PM me an address so I may be prepared. I'm not declaring defeat, only a tactical retreat! When the student is ready, the teacher will (re) appear!
Lemme see what I can find!Virginia is renowned for their country smoked hams...
My mouth is watering! The best ham I ever had was in Virginia. And southern hospitality is something that us northerners could learn from.
MFR, no doubt about it. I have a bunch of it.Updated pics fellas.

through the roses and blackberries I was covered in blood looking like something out of a Hellraiser movie when good neighbor Adam showed up on the hill top for a visit. He didn't say anything but I think that I left an impression.
