Micro woods plot success pics

Just checked my 2 new micro woods plots for the first time since spring green up. I busted my tail to get these cleared and planted in September and I’m really happy with the results. They are loaded with green. I planted Buck Forage Oats for the first time and they survived our winter no problem. We had a number of nights in the teens and a few in single digits, so I was wondering if the BFO’s would make it. There are multiple types of clover among the oats. Soil test last month showed pH of 5.4, so I need to work on that asap. I’m going to let the oats seed out to give the turkey a treat. I’m planning to transition these plots to WINA clover + chicory plots this fall.

Those plots are looking good DIY!! My creek plot from last fall is starting to fill in but it's not quite as lush as yours. The new one I cleared this spring has a long way to go still.

First pic is from last fall's plot with frost seeded oats from this spring. Pic was taken on 4/27. Second pic is my new plot with oats and clover frost seeded this spring and pic was taken on 4/13.

Guess it’s time for an update on my +/-.25 acre plot. Cleared and planted in mid March. In general I’d say March is a weird time to start a new plot. I’d prefer to start in the fall.

WR and MRC broadcast in March. I added 10 pounds of BW ~May 3rd, Picture taken May 4th.

I started daylighting the plot in May, I’ll continue that project next month.

Great Thread.

The ONLY way we can do any Plots is make them Micro. We are leasing the land and are not allowed to cut any Market Trees. So I have to work with areas that I believe will get enough sun to allow growth.

Last year I disced to Fresh Ground an area that was maybe 1/4 acre and seeded it with WTI Clover as the main seed and mixed in some Wintergreens. The WG's did not much at all, but the Clover did pretty good, with as dry as Florida's Piney Woods are.

Other Plots I tried either were ate to the ground or never did much even with extra Lime and Fert. The other one that did OK was wet and had some Sun. which I have learned is the Key on our land.

We will add others this year but here is what we got so far:

This one got eat to the ground.

This one is 40 feet in diameter, surrounded by hardwoods and pines ..... Durana Clover, planted last fall.... it still amazes me.

This is a little experiment plot i threw in this spring using my new found lazy method seems to be going strong 20 days after planting. Its a custom blend of seed that i swear i wrote down somewhere but from what i remember it's WR, DR, CC, Alfalfa, RC and a few other odd seeds i had left over maybe some cow peas or soy beans cant remember.

Our biggest issue is the low quality of the soil. And after talking with a neighbor who's grandfather owned the land on 3 sides, this piece has always been planted pines for as long as he could remember. So not much "good stuff" to work with from the start.

I plan to be up there in 2 weeks and will check on what we have and add others.

I checked my creek plot this evening and the oats are getting some good height to them and have started to produce seed heads. I was surprised to find two beds right in the middle of the plot and I also found some of the ladino clover making it's way through. I will cut the oats later this summer and add some more clover and winter rye in the fall.

I was doing some research and I'm not so sure those seed heads (second pic above) in my plot are oats. Everything I'm seeing online looks like rye to me, but I thought my fall planted rye from last year was mostly flooded out. Can anyone confirm? I must have oats and rye mixed because when I frost seeded oats a couple months back I have close up pics of the oat seeds germinating. Pic below was taken 3/23/19. I guess the rye that survived is what I'm seeing has the seed heads?

Did your buckwheat do ok? I have similar plot I may add buckwheat to Saturday

Yes, winter rye. It’s pretty much bullet proof.

Mid June update. MRC and WR planted in March. BW added early May.

Clover doing great, WR 12” on average although I did have spots where it was taller. BW off to a slow start. We had a 5-6 week drought but got 10 inches last weekend. Little white flowers everywhere.

This little spot is my best looking plot. Don’t think I could possibly stomach killing it in September. I’ll probably add more MRC, CC and WR in September and call it good.

I need to get back up to my property and get some work done, but chores here are keeping me busy. We decided to go ahead and do the re-model we have been talking about for a few years. Took a wall down and removed that popcorn from the ceiling. Also pulled up the carpet and fake tile. Been at it for a couple of weeks and still have much to do.

I planted 25 soft mast trees this year. I don't remember exactly which trees made it in there but there are 3 apple and 1 pear in that plot. A few hundred yards away I have a .8 acre plot with 9 soft mast trees.
