Live from the Stand - 2025

Me and br'er bear played hide and seek for three days last Thursday Friday and Saturday, but bear was always one step ahead. Adios and happy trails, I now get back to focusing on re-patterning my target buck.

Finally pulled the trigger this morning and muffed it. Decent buck quartering away at 65 yards, shot felt good, and he acted hit. He ran off to the left. Waited half an hour then got down to go get him - white hair and not one drop of blood. WTF?

Went and got my dog - he was useless. I think he thought we were looking for armadillos.

I grid searched the two areas I thought he could be and found nothing.

After an hour of searching, I went back to where I thought he ran. Always best to start at the beginning. After careful looking, I found his tracks (still not a drop of blood). I followed them for several yards down the road, and then they stopped. If he went right, I would have seen him from the stand, so I went left. After a minute or two, my dog must have run into the deer because he stood up 15 yards away. He’s gut shot - he must have turned as I pulled the trigger - and hurting bad. He ran off at a slow pace and I think bedded down again. Of course I didn’t have my gun with me.

I’m going to give him some time then head after him.

Did your dog find him in the end? Look at the stains on those antlers... Is that pine tar or what? Congrats on a nice mature buck!

Yes, technically my dog found him - just like a blind squirrel finds a nut. He certainly didn’t track him - he stumbled upon him.

The buck travelled less than 100 yards from where I shot him. Not 1 drop of blood.
