I need a new broadcast seed spreader, what to buy.

My bag spreader I've had for many years is wearing out. I've ran many bags of seed, fertilizer and lime through it and the gears have been skipping randomly as of late. I've been looking at just buying another earth way, but I've also been looking at the three point spreaders. Does anyone use a three point spreader and how do you like it?

I should be around 4-5 acres of plots next year and time is short.

If you do a lot of small seed, talking Clover and brassica seeds, the smaller opening of a bag type spreader is better. Hard to get a 3 point to meter out small seeds without modifications.

Good point smallplot. I typically use a small lawn/yard spreader to sow the clover seeds.

I have a 3pt spreader and love it but now I use my Moultrie ATV spreader 90% of the time. I use it for both large seeds and small seeds. No more manual seed spreading for this old man.

I use a Moultrie ATV spreader for rye and other grains, I use a solo spreader for clovers and smaller seeds. I have a bag seeder too but I find the solo much easier to use.

I use an Earthway atv spreader and the Solo that's pictured. Both do very well, going to add a small hose clamp on the atv spinner shaft this year to help feed the larger seed. I also use a 3 point cyclone spreader for larger seed in the bigger fields.

I was very disappointed in the Earthway ATV spreader. It doesn't have any guards, so the material is thrown 360 degrees. That means much of your material is thrown into your ATV, not a good situation, especially with fert. Mine already took a crap, before I had a chance to engineer a fix. I use a solo chest spreader, it is great. As I've said before, I wish it was a little shorter for peple smaller in stature. I'm 6'4" and get along fine with it, but my wife is a marathon runner and can spread all day, but she can't see over it!

I use 3 point spreader and love it. Great for deer mixes, and mix your own wheat, oats, rye. Also, great for fertilizer. Just wash and oil it good after each use. I use small earthway for clover and purple top turnips.

I have in the past used the Solo spreader for small seed and a pull behind for the larger. No more. Now I just mix small and larger seed together in pull behind. Works perfect. Never got the Solo out of garage this year. If u do want a hand spreader def get the hardsided Solo. Best I've used.

I use a cyclone/conical spreader 3 point type for medium and large seed and fertilizer. For medium seed like cereal grains I will often mix the seed and fertilizer together. For small seed I prefer something that meters seed better. The bag and chest style spreaders I have heard good things about.....I need to get one. I used one of the lawn type push ones before.....I think it's still in the woods when I tossed it after getting frustrated! I use a small hand held one for my small seed now, but I have small plots so it works fine for that. It's all about the right tool for the job.

I have a tractor supply pull behind atv spreader that I tossed in the woods several times. Then i would talk myself into repairing it one more time. After the 4th time I got mad at it and tossed it in the trees I found a big log and beat it to pieces so I wouldn't be tempted again to try to fix it.

I love my spreader as well, would love to have a no till drill but just too pricey.

This is not the best way to do it but I take a bungee cord and bungee shut my cyclone spreader for small seeds like clover and turnips. Leaves just enough of an opening and works perfectly for us.

Maybe you and I can split the cost on our needed anger management therapy. Thot I was the only one who privately lost it on my hilly plots. Releases a lot of frustration. I had a psychologist ask me once if I was humming as I was doing some work for her. I replied probably so but not intentionally. She told me that was an excellent way to relieve stress and now I hum unashamingly all the time at work and blame it on my free therapist.

I tend to make sure if I toss it, it doesn't come back! Working on the farm has taught me that in most cases A - you get what you pay for, and B - get the right tool for the job the first time, and C- going cheap or fast or half-assed tends to mean you only get to do it/buy it again!

I have a solo for smaller jobs and a herd gt77 for the quad. It was the first time using the herd this year. I spread soybean, corn, clover , turnip and radish. Worked wonderful.

I have one of these also. Very sturdy construction. Tape a piece of card stock over the seed opening to reduce the volume for small seed.
